Michael, thanks for posting the summary -- but also know that you don't need to use the Terminal, pico, etc.. for the changes required to the files. If you go to the .kext files, just do a ctrl-click on them, and do Show Package Contents, then you can drill down to get to the Info.plist document, which TextEdit opens and saves with no problems....

The only thing you need the command line for is the rebuilding of the kernel extension cache...

Just a couple of quick questions - I've tried the procedure (changing both the VendorID and the ProductID in both plist files but while the menu bar item shows up, I can't configure it to work.

Just to make sure that I'm headed in the right direction...

1) When you inserted the card, did it show up as a Novatel Wireless CDMA Modem or as the 5220?
2) Does the secondary communications port (which allows activiation and signal strength) work with the 5220 driver?

I believe the kextcache will automatically be rebuilt on reboot.

Thank you guys for your hard work and brilliance in making the v620 available to powerbook users. I'll have to wait for the installer since I'm leary of going through the complex process you've laid out.

So... now that you're using the v620 on a powerbook... does it truly perform better than the 5220?

Ok, I got the 5220 driver to work with the V620, but there (in my experience) are a bunch of "gotchas".

1) The secondary port - for activation, PRL update, and signal strength, is non-functional. (Has this worked for someone else?)
2) The auto-configuration tool when you first insert the card doesn't work either.

Hence, the menubar item it useless. The configuration is manual in the Network preference pane.

And yes, by its nature, the V620 doesn't need anything to work except the phone number (#777).

Yes, the reason the 5220 has been discontinued by Verizon is not just because the V620 is less expensive. It is also because the chipset onboard is more efficient and can better maximize the throughput of the EVDO protocol.

(Not to mention that the V620 antenna can't be broken, and it provides diversity reception in both the Cell band and the PCS band - the 5220 provides diversity only on the PCS band).

So unless you're HORRIBLY impatient, there's NO reason to waste your time sleuthing out a 5220. Its a dated product which will perform less well. Its truely possible to hit 2Mbps with the V620. The same can't be said for the 5220.

More to come...

I tried 2 different PCI PCMCIA adapters on my G5 and I was not able to get them to work (more info up here and on EVDOInfo.com), on which ones didn't work.

BTW, can someone send me a screen shot of the System Profiler showing the PCI/AGP Cards with the Novatel VendorID, DeviceID showing. Please send to mike at EVDOinfo.com

Thanks!

I went through the clear instructions and the V620 now shows up in the menu. When I first inserted the card no dialogue box appeared though V620 did appear in the menu. I used the Configure menu there to set up a new network setting according to the instructions.

Quote:
In this new profile, enter the following:
# Service Provider = Verizon
# Account Name = xxxxxxxxxx@vzw3g.com (replace xxx's with your Verizon Phone Number)
# Password = vzw
# Telephone Number: #777
# Hit the Apply Now button

I used the Verizon Support (PC 5220) modem for the ppp connection. When I try to connect I get the following error message.

Sat Apr 16 15:03:48 2005 : Starting Apple Verizon Support CCL
Sat Apr 16 15:03:48 2005 : Connecting to Network
Sat Apr 16 15:03:53 2005 : Connect script failed

I wonder if there is something missing in the instructions? There must be some difference between those who are getting the modem error (Comments - http://www.evdoinfo.com/Tips/PC_5220/PowerBook_Mac_OS_X_Directions_To_Use_Novatel_V620_20050414238/) and those who connect.

Thanks for any help.
Bruce

Here is something that may be different.

For those that have it working - did you first activate the card on a PC and then use it on your Mac? For those that are having problems, can you try activating it first on a PC (if possible) and then see if it works.

I am trying to get an unactivated Novatel V620 for testing, but I don't have one.

I did not try to activate it first on a PC so the Mac was it's first try. I only had a blinking green light so perhaps you are correct and the Verizon activation never occurred.

Thank you for the lead.

I have a 5220 that I got last week off of eBay and will sell it to anyone for what I paid - $152.00 plus shipping.

Now, on to the next topic. I am waiting on my V620 to arrive. I bought it becuase of the information on this post. With regard to the 5220, you do not need to activate it on a PC first and probably do not need to activate the V620 on a PC either.

Verizon actually worked with me to activate the 5220 without an issue and they knew it was on a Mac. Just put the phone number in that Verizon gives you - they will tell you your phone number, even though it is not a real phone.

Next, this is the hard thing for us Mac users, you have to restart the computer - yes, restart. Then you will find that the card works without a problem.

You can easily activate the PC 5220 on a Mac OS X by the following the directions below:

http://www.EVDOinfo.com/Tips/PC_5220/Find_Out_Your_Current_PRL_Version_2005021756/

These steps currently do not work with other EVDO PC Cards, only the 5220.

I think the problems that some have had, may be related to the fact, that the card needs to be activated (once) on a Windows computer before you use it on a Mac. The people that have not had any problems, seem to have done this extra step. I should get a confirmation tonight, from someone who had problems, and is activating on a PC and then trying again on his PowerBook.
