Questions:

Where does the modem script go?

And, what are the configuration settings?

Yes, I'm surfing on the Powerbook with the v620.

I installed the driver for the 5220 from Apple. I then changed the XML files following the instructions from the macosxhints.com thread except using the values Michael posted, instead:

<key>idProduct</key>
<integer>4368</integer>
<key>idVendor</key>
<integer>5136</integer>

I restarted, inserted the card and it recognized it. It put icons up in the menu bar. I opened the network control panel and chose the card and entered the following info in the PPP config:

phone : #777
username : xxxxxxxxxx@vzw3g.com (where the x's are my phone #)
pass : vzw

Then I hit the modem tab and selected "Verizon Support (PC 5220)" from the list of modems. Then I picked connect from the menu in the menu bar. Works great.

Perhaps 'djpubba' can chime in, from his last email, it sounded like all was working with his Novate V620 and PowerBook.

You should already have a modem script in the following location:

/Library/Modem Scripts/Verizon Support (PC 5220)

I am not sure what changes (if any), need to be made to this script.

It looks like the script (you can open with BBEdit or another text editor), is just using the old fashion Hayes Modem commands, for example, this line:

write "ATE0V1&F&D2&C1&C2S0=0\13"

initializes the PC Card, I will have to see if I can get a Novatel V620 technical manual, but if I remember, something like this, may set the PC Card for factory defaults:

write "AT&F\13"

I have a PC 5220 card, it would be so much easier if I had a V620 too Smile

I didn't touch the modem script which the apple 5220 drivers install. I just selected it from the list.

It works perfect!

I didn't have to screw around with the modem script at all.

I used the phone # for the user name, and just hit "enter" when it asked for a password.

I am also surfing the web on the v620. Laughing

Congratulations djpubba!

You may be officially the FIRST person to be using a Novatel V620 on their PowerBook.

OK, now it looks like Andy is the SECOND!

I would love to document this and either build an installer, to make it REAL simply.

Andy, after making the changes to 2 files and inserting your card, did you have to mess around with Internect Connect and enter #777 or was that automatically there for you?

P.S. There are going to be a LOT of happy PowerBook owners out there tomorrow Smile

I entered the #777 and my phone #, and that's it.

Hit connect, and you're online.

Yeah, it didn't enter all that info for me either, I had to do it myself.

It looks like the phone # is locked to the card. When I authenticated on a Wintel box, it only asked for the phone #, nothing else.

Now I'd like to explore any custom settings that may increase the speed. I just clocked a 1.4mb download time.

OT: All I need now to be living in EVDO bliss is figure out how to get the v620 working on a G5 tower. Has anyone ever heard of a way to get PCMCIA/Cardbus cards working on a G5?

Back On T: If you write up a doc or make an installer, be sure to note that you may have to activate the v620 on a Wintel box first.

You can activate the card completely on a Mac without a Win Box, see this page for more info:

Thanks to Andy, djpubba, and Michael - all it took was us four to collectively put our heads together, each contribute bits of information, and presto!

I knew I was potentially onto something when I read that macosxhints article!

Cheers,
Dan

Yes, thanks to all that helped and how efficient and quickly we all worked virtuall together - this makes this forum rock - THANKS!

I posted a summary note at:

http://www.EVDOinfo.com/Tips/PC_5220/PowerBook_Mac_OS_X_Directions_To_Use_Novatel_V620_20050414238/

Early next week, I will be making an installer, that simplifies this (I already have been contact by many that were scared off by what they needed to do). When the installer is available, I will post info to this thread as well.

Thanks again everyone!
