For those using the V620 on your Mac, there is ONE huge thing missing? How strong is the signal. Here is a (bit technical) way to find out:

Download zTerm

Launch ZTerm

For modem select verizon001

Type in AT +CSQ?

The first number returned is between 0 -31 (99 = no service).

So, if you get a 24. Divide 24/31 = 70% signal strength

This seems to work only when the PC Card is NOT connected, but it is a good way to determine you signal strength, until other options come out.

I have had to switch to the V620 card as my 5220 died. I am operating Tiger. I activated that new card on my windoze machine. Works great there. I have done the three manual steps set forth the Merlin CDMA now appears under info... I went through the modem setup. I go under internet connection try to connect. It goes through the Autherizing User and fails and I get unable to establish PPP or what ever that message says

When I try again and get a modem error..

anyone have any ideas? I can't fault the card .., works great on the Thinkpad..

I just upgraded to 10.4 (Tiger) today. Starting with a clean install, I duplicated the process I used (above) for getting the V620 to work with 10.3.9 and everything worked exactly the same. Whew!

...the automatic installer didn't make my Mac running OS X 10.4.1 recognize the card. I then performed the manual instructions documented at http://evdoinfo.com/Tips/PC_5220/PowerBook_Mac_OS_X_Directions_To_Use_Novatel_V620_20050414238/ and the new card works flawlessly on my 15" Powerbook!

I had the 620 card working in a 17" 1.33GHz PB OS 10.3.9 for a couple weeks. Now it crashes the machine.

While it was working, to keep the computer happy, the card had to be removed after shutdown and inserted while running for the machine to properly recognize the card. That worked like a champ for two weeks. Now, when inserting the card, the cursor arrow freezes as does the whole machine. It's in my father-in-law's machine, but he doesn't mess with any settings as he doesn't know what any of them are. I've repaird permissions, run the full mantenance of Onyx, and still no love. Any ideas?

Thanks
Dan

Two things to try:

First use Terminal in /Applications/Utilities) and execute this:

Code:
sudo rm /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache
sudo kextcache -k /System/Library/Extensions
sudo shutdown -r now

If that doesn't work, download the Apple Verizon 1.0 drivers , reinstall and then reapply the Novatel V620 manual direction patch.

WARNING, only Install the Apple Verizon 1.0 drivers if you are running 10.3.5 - 10.3.9. If you are running 10.4x, DO NOT INSTALL THEM, as they will completely hose your OS and the card will not be recognized - installing Tiger is the only way to fix this. Again, it is OK to install the Apple Verizon Drivers if you are running 10.3.4 - 10.3.9

Well, the next step isn't to pleasant, but will probably fix things, re-install Mac OS X (Archive and Install).

SO, now I've done an Archive and Install of 10.3, ugraded to 10.3.9, reinstalled the AirPrime 5220 Driver, made the manual changes to the product and vendor ID's and the same thing happens as before. I did finf out that my father in law (whose powerbook this is) at one time pulled the card out while the book was asleep and put it back in after he realized that it was not shut down. It worked for two weeks after that. I can't help but think it's related, but I can't explain why it would work for a couple weeks, a few shutdown/startup cycles, and then stop working while the machine is running, when it had been working earlier in that same day. I'm at a loss.

Since this thread is Mac, just to point out, that if you are considering EVDO, as of today (12/14/2005), there is only one EVDO card that is supported on Mac. That card is the Kyocera KPC650. It is the only card available that has Mac drivers. Sprint doesn't offer the Kyocera KPC650 (yet!), just Verizon.

We do have directions on EVDOinfo.com to get both the Sprint S620 and Merlin S620 working on Mac, however, read this page first.
