Thanks everyone for the help. I finally got my V620 card to work in my Powerbook 15" running 10.3.9. The key appears to be reinstalling the 5220 driver and then manually updating each .kext file. Michael's installer does the same thing, but doing it manually seems to be the only way it works correctly in 10.3.9.
Speed is OK in 1XRTT, much better than dial up at 90-110 kbps, but the same card in a Dell with Venturi client pulls a bandwidth rating of 400+ kbps (probably not accurate, read other threads). Latency is still an issue, takes a second or so to respond.
So when in doubt, follow directions, reinstall 5220 drivers and enter everything manually from scratch.

| Had a few problems with setting up the card with my PB 15" 1.67ghz, the hang up with the installer seemed to be OS X 10.3.9; but with some help from the forum admin was able to get the card going. I'm right in the middle of the Baltimore-Washington area and both reception and speeds are great. |

I'm frustrated. I have the v620. I downloaded & installed Michael's patch. I activated the card on a PC. It works fine on the PC. When I try to connect I get modem error. When I look at the list of modems there is no Novatel listed. The only Verizon listed is the 5220. I s that my problem? I can't select Novatel because it isn't listed? I've repeated the download a couple of times with restarts. Green light but can't connect. Any ideas? I'm running 10.3.9 on a G4 Powerbook.
Thanks,
Sam |

i'll give some info based on my experience how to make the v620 work if you are having problems (since I have been selfishly reading and not helping for awhile now)
I am using a 15" powerbook, 1.67, about 2 months old.
I ran the installer.
Insert card, and the system does not recognize it. I get a modem error.
so...
I went back to the manual process.
I "vi" the plist files and without changing anything I see that the idVendor and idProduct are already updated to the required numbers.
I then "rebuild the kernel extension cache" by executing the two required commands.
I restart, insert the card, use internet connect, and it works.
So the installer didn't complete the entire process for me- not until I "rebuild the kernel extension cache" in xterm manually was I successful in making the v620 work.
also, when I installed Tiger yesterday, the card was not recognized again. So I did the same process, ran the installer, manually "rebuild the kernel extension cache", restart, insert card, use internet connect and all is good.
not sure if that helps anyone, but in my case the Installer program was not a "turnkey" solution.
(I activated the card on a winXP laptop before doing anything) |

I can confirm that the Installer does have an issue with Tiger / 10.4.
I have notified the company that makes the installer software.
So until, there is a fix, the manual process is the one that works.
I also, just updated the download page to let future people know that the installer currently works in 10.3x and not 10.4. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

Well I finally got this to work. Here's what I did:
1.) The process will not work unless you already have the AirPrime 5220 Modem Script installed. I had a Verizon PC 5220 script installed and it did not work, nor did Michael's installer work on it. I found the correct script online and installed it. ( mail.bellardo.com/~bellardo/airprime/ )
2.) I ran Michael's installer. Restart.
3.) I set-up my card on a Windows machine, then promptly discarded said machine. No further use for it.
4.) I inserted the card into my PowerBook. It did NOT ask me to configure it. In fact, I've never heard of such a thing on a Mac. Sounds like more of a PC "Found New Hardware" kind of message to me (yuck). Did anyone else get such a message?
5.) I opened Network Preferences and when I did that, the Novatel Wireless Merlin CDMA card was listed as one of my ports. I selected that port.
6.) I configured that location/port the way everyone said above to configure it. It's important to select the AirPrime 5220 modem script. It won't work otherwise. Make sure you disable the "wait for tone" option.
Under Network:
Location: Automatic
Show: Novatell Wireless Merlin CDMA (this should appear in the list if you've got the right script, modified it with Michael's program, and set up the card already on a PC)
Under the PPP tab:
Service Provider: Verizon
Account Name: (Your number)@vzw3g.com
Password: vzw
Telephone Number: #777 (yes, the # is necessary)
Under the Modem tab:
Modem: AirPrime 5220
Wait for dial tone before dialing: Unchecked.
Everything worked at that point. Awesome!
7.) If you want to use Macintosh Mail or some other e-mail client, you'll need to contact Verizon and have them authorize you. It took a little explaining to have them figure out what I needed, but once he got it, a little lightbulb went off and he knew just what to do. The guy's name is Marcus Edwards, and he's competent and nice. They gave me the smtp info (smtp.vzwmail.net) that you need to enter into your e-mail client in order to tell it what server to use to relay your outgoing mail for you. They also will give you your user name and password, and set-up the account for you on their end. No charge, and it starts to work within about two hours (he told me up to 24 hours, but it worked after two). If you are just using webmail, like Yahoo, none of this is necessary. |

I have had to switch to the V620 card as my 5220 died. I am operating Tiger. I activated that new card on my windoze machine. Works great there. I have done the three manual steps set forth the Merlin CDMA now appears under info... I went through the modem setup. I go under internet connection try to connect. It goes through the Autherizing User and fails and I get unable to establish PPP or what ever that message says
When I try again and get a modem error..
anyone have any ideas? I can't fault the card .., works great on the Thinkpad..

Okay, I've been trying for a couple of days to follow all the various instructions to get my Novatel v620 card to work on my mac PB G4. David Slam's instructions got me the closest, but now I get a message that says..."No carrier detected. Please check phone line connection and try again."
So I'm still not on...what am I doing wrong? The Verizon guy assured me that the card is activated....
I really need this to work....any helpful suggestions? Thanks!
Oh, BTW, I seem to be an idiot at viewing or editing or even getting access to .kext files...altho I used to be a dandy DOS user.... |

| Also, when I power off the card, it freezes my keyboard and I have to hard boot...I really dislike doing that!... |

| One short term solution for your driver issue is to get a portable EVDO 3G Router which converts the EVDO signal to WiFi signal. All Laptop and OS has WiFi drivers already. Search Top 3G Router on google to find a supplier for the 3G Router. |

|
|
| I have a novatel v620 and followed all the steps here and the card has been working perfectly for a month. Then yesterday i woke up and found that instead of getting a flashing green light i get a steady yellow light and the card no longer is able to connect me to the internet. I am using a 15'' power book G4 with Tiger that is roughly a month old. Checking the connection log it says "Connect script failed" and then "Terminating of script 15". I don't know what any of this means. All i know is that up until 36 hours ago the card worked fine and now it just has the yellow light. Any ideas on what my problem might be? Thanks a lot. |

The v620 typically shows up on the computer as "Merlin CDMA" or some variation.
the 5220 would be some variation of "Airprime CDMA"
I've seen the names vary a little from computer to computer and I'm not entirely sure why. But Merlin is typically the name of the v620.
Hope this clears things up. |
