With the new S620 Connection Manager, you can force EVDO even if signal is weaker than a 1xRTT signal. I'm in Tampa at the moment. If looking at the map North on I-75 at San Antonio, it will only get 1xRTT if turned to Auto. When forcing to EVDO, I get EVDO about 7-8 or so miles N of San Antonio with booster antenna and about 5 miles with no antenna. That's quite a bit of extra coverage.
