I live in the San Luis Obispo, CA area, and there is no EVDO coverage here yet. I also live far enough out of town so that I don’t get DSL, Cable, or WISP access. I am trying to use the 1xRTT network to game on, but the ping times are horrible. I get 100% signal strength with my V620 card using Win XP Home. Any suggestions on getting better ping times on 1xRTT?

Just out of curiosity, what kind of ping times can I expect once EVDO becomes available in my area?

Thanks for your help.

What kind of ping times are you getting?

BTW, search on the word PING in this forum, there have been others reporting ping times.

Thanks for the response. I have been getting 1400 to 1500 ms pings. 1 1/2 seconds is way too long for gaming.

I did some test in a 3 bar 1xRTT area and was getting 400 - 500ms.

Yours seem VERY high (even for 1xRTT).

I get right close to 380ms pings to the first hop in a traceroute list (1xRTT). Online gaming is possible with those ping times, but the upload bandwidth is capped at 26.4kbits which will kill you since this is slower than a regular v.90 or v.92 dialup modem. And when the uplink chokes up, your ping times go to he11. I've tried everything I can come up with and the bottomline is that online gaming is simply not possible with 1xRTT. Maybe with some of the older games, but any of the newer 3D games, you're SOL. I've been "offline" now for over a year waiting for EVDO to try and I suspect I'll have to give up gaming and learn to be a gardener. I hear a lot of hype and lots of promises, but nothing has happened in this area. Sad

I only have 1xRTT and have no problems playing everquest 2 or City of Heros. But as far as playing a game of half-life 2 or UT where the action is so much faster, it's a whole different (and somewhat horrible) experience because I'm dead before I can even see an enemy. So I guess we had better stick to the slower games for now until EVDO comes to the boonies.

A lot of jitter there Mike, but it's about 100ms better than 1xRTT.

I will get on average on 1xRTT anywhere from 10 to 30 secends before the dormant stage becomes active after I click to open a web page I am using the pc5220 card .

I use my own brand of dormant killer under NetBSD (should work on other OSs with few changes)
Code:
/sbin/ping -s 0 -T 1 -i 5 -n -q 66.174.168.4 &
Just drop this line in your /etc/rc.local file to let it run continuously at boot. It makes a huge difference and has nearly minimal bandwidth usage.

Hey Glint, I'm also out in the boonies (Edna Valley) of San Luis Obispo. I'm not using the 1X now, but I am desperately waiting for EVDO. As you know, high-speed options in SLO are limited. I have CIC Wireless for their horrible wireless service (but still better than Digital Putty) and cannot wait for EVDO. Do you have any idea when we will get it here?

i checked and i dont have an rc.local file. i do have rc.netboot. would i have to create this file or do i need to dwnld a dormant killer file first?

i usually connect to EVDO but am in an area where dropping back to 1X would be common. also, wouldnt the dormant file prevent the "stay connected" prompt from popping up every half hour?
