Last week I received my KR1 and KPC650 from Booster-Antenna. I took out the pre-configured KPC650 and inserted into the slot of the KR1. I connected the KR1 to my laptop with a CAT5 cable. And after much anticipation, I plugged in the power cord for the KR1 and watched as the system sprang to life. I opened the run command window and typed in http://192.168.0.1 and ran the wizard. I setup the password, selected a time zone, and accepted the defaults for the remainder of the wizard. Within minutes I was up and running with a shared internet connection using the cellular network – cool!

I disconnected the CAT5 cable and located the KR1 SSID and connected to the WiFi network … or tried to … it did not connect! It tried and tried but just could not connect. Could there be a conflict with my WiFi network upstairs? Maybe, so I take both radios off auto and set the channel upstairs to 8 and the KR1 to 5. I try again to connect and it works … a bit hesitant but it works. Great! Not the desired results but I have a connection and I head for my favorite bandwidth test site <grin> that’s why we do this right? To run the bandwidth test over and over again <smile>. I get 115k up and down … I am satisfied for a non-EVDO service area. I run my little network availability tool to monitor the connection from my laptop to my web site and things look good. I leave the room and return 20 minutes later and all my green bars are red! I check the status lights on the router and they are all lit like they do when the router first starts (not good).

I call Booster Antenna and let them know what happened. They were out of KR1’s (imagine that) so they gave me the support number to see if they can handle a DOA and send me a new router. After about 30 minutes on the phone confirming that the router was indeed broken, they tell me that they are not setup to handle a DOA and can only offer an RMA to get the router repaired. As you might imagine I am not too excited about getting a new router repaired. I called Booster Antenna back and let them know what happened. While I was on the phone with DLink (yes support is handled by DLink), Michael was on the phone with Kyocera.

As it turns out … I might be the lucky person to receive the first DOA KR1 router. Tomorrow I will find out how this will be handled … I will let you know how things work out. So far everyone has been very responsive …

Kyocera was initially going to send us directly a replacement and then we would ship it to you. After explaining to them, that was a waste of time and money, Kyocera told us they had worked out an exchange program for any DOAs to be handled as follows:

- Customer calls a special 800 number
- D-Link / Kyocera gets credit card info from customer (no charges are applied though)
- D-Link / Kyocera sends our replacement directly to customer, with return tag
- If customer fails to return DOA unit, their credit card is charged for the 2nd unit - if customer returns within 10 days, no charges appear

Obviously, the phone number was not correct, or this was still getting rolled out to the guys at D-Link.

I will contact Kyocera again Wednesday morning to see what is going on. Since, you were the first and this is new to D-Link too, I imagine, it takes a little time to get things in placed. I will contact you directly Wednesday, AND also, start a new thread so others know how to get this handled quickly and efficiently.

I was a bit disappointed about the router not working properly but am not displeased with the support that I have received from you or Kyocera/DLink. I am in the business and I learned a long time ago that it’s not the problem we need to focus on but the solution to the problem.

We are on the right track …

The replacement router arrived today. I saved the config before I shut it down, so I just copied the saved config to the new router and viola! I am up and running. It has been 2 hours now with a steady ping to the gateway and my website without a single red bar (using PingIT). Also, I am using the same tablet that I used when the test failed. The only thing that is different is the hardware. I am backup and running.

Thanks Michael!

Oh and for those wondering why it took 2 weeks. I told Michael I was not in a hurry and did not need it right away …
