Updated: Dec 4, 2006

Here is a list of markets with EVDO or HSDPA that will be continuously updated. It is based on Sprint/Verizon/Cingular/Alltel maps and announcements. The Metro Statistical Area markets are defined by the US Census Bureau instead of carriers, which are not apples to apples. Canada and Mexico have also been added at bottom of list, see maps at bottom of this post.

If you have a source or have accessed EVDO/HSDPA in a city not listed, please post and I'll update the list as 'reported coverage'. Please help keep the list accurate.

Number of distinct contiguous MSA metro markets partially or mostly covered by high speed wireless carriers:
Sprint: 170+ markets (188 million+ population coverage claimed)
Verizon: 125+ markets (164m+ pops coverage claimed)
Cingular: 25+ markets (70m+ pops coverage claimed)
Alltel: 11+ markets (Alltel/Sprint have a free DO roaming agreement)
Canada: 4 markets (Bell Canada//Sprint have DO roaming agreement)
Mexico: 4 markets (Iusacell/Sprint have DO roaming agreement)

Verizon may have outskirts of some metro areas more broadly covered. Sprint is currently in more markets overall and has mentioned plans to rollout to nearly 100% of network by end of 2007.

A few to add to the list: Victorville, CA; Lancaster/Palmdale CA; Palm Springs/Indio CA; South Lake Tahoe, CA; All these would be confirmed Sprint EVDO cities. Also, for the most part Sprint affiliates are holding back Sprint EVDO coverage in many fairly big size cities: Fresno CA, Modesto CA, Stockton CA, Bakersfield CA, etc..

Verizon wishes it was in CO Springs. Not available. I did extensive testing. They have 1 tower near Fort Carson. However, it is so slow, I wouldnt even consider it EVDO. Sprint has thus far the greatest EVDO coverage in CO Springs. Sprint even has iEVDO out in Black Forest (middle of nowhere), whereas Verizon has no coverage PERIOD.

Verizon shows coverage in Barstow, CA, and along the I-15 on both sides of the CA/NV border, as well as in the Laughlin, NV/Bullhead City, AZ area. They also have coverage at Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear Lake, CA.

Verizon shows pretty much continuous coverage of the I-10 from Santa Monica to east of Indio, while Sprint shows gaps in coverage between Redlands and Banning and between Banning and Palm Springs.

Sprint shows coverage of an area along CA-62 (more on the north side than the south side) from east of Joshua Tree to 29 Palms, where Verizon only has 1XRTT coverage.

Would like to know of the MSA markets listed if anyone has found coverage not marked on the list.

I'm in Central Florida this weekend and have noticed that all areas marked on Sprint's maps as 'future' are now live. I haven't found areas with EVDO not on the maps though.

Seeking input for this list. If you have accessed EVDO or HSDPA in a city not marked as having it, please post and I'll update the list. I'm looking for unique markets, not cities that are near an existing listed MSA/metro already marked for high speed.

I'm beginning to wonder if Sprint and Verizon have slowed down the EVDO rollouts. No new markets have appeared from Verizon since December. Sprint got a big jump in January but there have been no reports (by users or by Sprint) of newer markets since the last map update, though Sprint loosely mentioned a rollout to 100% of network by 2007.

Some of the larger markets left for Sprint are maintained by Alamosa, which Sprint will soon acquire so maybe they will get EVDO later. Verizon may have hit a wall with only markets left that exclusively have 800mhz towers. Verizon has actually put EVDO in a couple 800 only markets but just a couple. Curious that Verizon is still lacking in a few markets over 1m population.

Also interesting that Cingular announced 100 HSDPA markets by end of this year yet no new markets have appeared in over 2 months.

Your suspicion about a slowdown may be well-founded.

The carriers now have EVDO enabled in the areas near most of their stores so they can sell PowerVision and Vcast phones and the higher priced plans. Too bad those features don't work at EVDO speeds when you go to other areas.

EVDO is turned on at the major business travel locations so they can claim that EVDO cards will work for most people.

There may not be any economic justification for them to continue the roll-out they hyped earlier until the lack of universal EVDO begins to impact sales. The threat of mobile WiMax from other providers may provide the incentive for them to continue the roll-out and perhaps to move to Rev A, but until then, they may be reluctant to increase the investment in EVDO.

In my area Sprint's story has definitely changed from coverage by the end of 2005 to possible coverage by October 2006.

I'm a little curious as to this too, from all I've been able to gather there has been no switches to EVDO since January with Sprint. I attempted to contact Sprint directly and a local contact I developed. All said that for my paticuliar area they plan on full EVDO coverage by 01/07 and the plan is to have the entre network converted to EVDO by then, but there will be unannounced test areas between now and then. It just seems that they have a lot of work to do in the next nine months to have the entire network converted when it seems nothing is happening at the moment.

csill PM'd me that Picayune, MS now has Sprint EVDO. Said Sprint did not have coverage in Jan but did in Feb, so maybe Sprint is still adding new sites.

There are some Verizon coverage areas in Washington that aren't covered, check out their maps in the far northwest.
