That looks very cool, only issue I see, is:
| Quote: | | Special software drivers are required for each card type. There is a mininum quantity and driver development fee for each card design needing support. |
For individual users - this could be expensive. Companies like Verizon or Sprint, or even Sierra, Kyocera, Novatel would be smart to hire these guys to write a driver. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

It also doesn't support Cardbus, so it won't work with the EVDO cards.

evDO, going back to its introduction in San Diego and Washington DC in the fall of 2003, is now basically 2 full years old in retail operations by Verizon.
And they STILL don't have a device that allows a substantial percentage of the mobile computing devices used by a substantial percentage of the people drawn to BroadBandAccess in the first place (mobile knowledge workers) to USE evDO WIRELESSLY (not counting bluetooth which more than cuts the speed in half).
Scandalous. |

The reason for my frustration is because it's terrible for it to be so close that you can taste it...but still so far away you can't taste it.
The "it" for me, at least, is combining Verizon's evDO service with an oQo via the Falcom Samba usb modem dongle.
I don't own an oQo because I was skeptical, as I usually am, of startup companies. I don't like to be used as a guinea pig while they make all of their inevitable mistakes. Also, I wasn't convinced that the oQo could serve as my only computer.
However, now that they've been in business operations for almost a year, it looks like they've got most of their mistakes regarding model 1 out of the way, that the guiea pigs have all been slaughtered, and from reading numerous posts and experiences of actual oQo users, I'm finally convinced that, combined with Verizon's evDO and Falcom Samba's usb model dongle, that I can make an oQo (even the model 1) my only computer.
I want that so bad I can SCREAM! The ability to just run hell bent all over Chicago and run my global Internet business out of my shirt or pants pocket any time and every time I want is just too sweet...
...so GodSLAMMIT, let's get GOING!!! |

Michael, you live in Chicago like me, right? I've with Verizon. Do you know if Sprint has launched evDO in Chicago on the business side yet? I hear that they're going to do that in July or August.
Also, does Sprint have any devices where their wireless Internet can be pumped into a handtop type of computer too small to have a PCMCIA card offering only a compact flash slot or a USB port? I know Cingular does but their EDGE is too slow, not being EVDO.

Sprint has a 1xRTT Compact Flash device, but not EVDO.
I haven't heard if Sprint has Chicago coverage yet. We just became an Authorized Sprint Agent (more on this soon), and will be getting up to speed with Sprint and getting a Sprint card - so lots more info related to Sprint coming soon (even sniffing out coverage areas, like Chicago to see where it really is).
The original leaked deployment plan has Chicago coming in December.

I received one from Cingular to test. The speed was obviously terrible, around 40k.
Verizon said we could get our hands on a model to test about 6 months ago, but still have not received it.
It appears they will not offer this in the states.
Too bad!
Does anyone have any leads on a 2 way USB to PCMCIA slot cable? My company would like to pilot one so we can use any card with a USB connection.
Any help would be much appreciated
Thanks |

A recent inquiry to Falcom USA concerning the Samba 3G recieved this response:
"The SAMBA 3G/EVDO USB modem concept was basically discontinued for a few reasons: the main issue being the fact that Qualcomm will be issuing newer EVDO chipsets later this year and Falcom did not want to produce and launch a product with outdated chipsets in them. It is possible that there might be a chance for the SAMBA 3G/EVDO USB modem to be re-evaluated for production later this year.
Currently, we are pushing the SAMBA-75 EDGE modem which is approved on the Cingular GSM+EDGE network and also available for full functionality on the T-Mobile GSM network as well."
Has anyone had success in getting a USB EVDO modem from Australia and using it on Sprint, Verizon or another U.S. EVDO provider? If so, could you please share the experience? |
