Since it seems as though Verizon is assigning us a cell number with our EVDO coverage (at least I think that's what it is), is there any app out there that would let you use it as a software-based cell phone of sorts?

The phone number is primarily used for two purposes:
1) Billing (they need a phone number for billing purposes)
2) SMS messages. This is very cool, and (if your card supports it - most newer cards do), you can send and receive sms messages while connected. Heck, you can even receive sms messages while you are not connected - as long as the PC card is inserted, you can send/receive.
There are 3rd party products that add softphone (e.g. Skype, iChat AV, SoftPhone by Vonage and others). _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

Thanks Michael - but what I guess I meant was a VOIP-like app that communicates over regular cell infrastructure.
With Skype, etc.. - to call a "real" phone, you pay an extra fee or whatever...
I don't really know what I'm talking about, but this seems like it would be possible... Why can't the computer emulate a real "cell" phone?

| Vonage has a soft phone feature included in their regualr price from what a salesperson told me. He didn't see any reason why it wouldn't work with EVDO. |

Vonage Softphone is not part of regular Vonage service, it is a different service you pay for.
I tried it last year and it didn't work very well, didn't try it over EVDO. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |
