Every once in a while, after connecting via the connect button. My DNS fails to resolve any name. Sometimes it will work if I wait a while, others I have to disconnect and re-connect. I have tried hard coding in a dns server address to my pc and turning off dns relay from within the router, other times using dns realy and pointing my dns adderss as the router. Either way, it will fail once in a while. I'm using a connected cat5 cable and using static addresses. I test by going to dos prompt and trying ping www.dell.com. I also turn off my software firewall.

Thanks,
Steven

Is there a particular reason you're using a static IP address? Doing this without specifying a valid DNS server can cause problems. If you must use a static IP, specify the addresses of your carrier's DNS servers in Windows. This information can be found on the Status tab in the router GUI. But really, just use DHCP and the rest will handle itself.

Since I only have 2 pc's I figured I would save the KR1 some resources and go static. Also I was using the same dns servers that get assigned to the KR1 when it connects. I also tried others dns servers that verizon was using, and then aol and covad. All which produced the same results. I will try the DHCP server which will just use the KR1 in dns relay mode and see if that works better.

Thanks,
Steven

KR1 isn't lacking in resources for DHCP, especially with only two clients. I think you'll find that it works much better for you.

DNS is UDP-based, isn't it? ('fire and forget') Outside of the DHCP/static setup, could it have anything to do with UDP packet loss (a weak wireless signal)?

DNS is mostly UDP based. It will employ TCP for requests that are greater than 512 bytes in size and also for DNS zone transfers. TCP is more often used between DNS servers to corroborate listings where UDP is used for client queries. It is possible that the cause was packetloss but I think the likelihood of a poor WAN connection is greater.

I just changed it to use DHCP and DNS relay, I will let you know if I have any more issues.

Thanks for the input,
Steven
