|
|
Just received my KR1 and enjoy the networking aspects (just like the old days when I had high-speed cable -- well, almost).
When I activated my Kyocera 650 on my laptop, I don't remember any password requirements, but my login id was my phone number@alltel.net. When I activated the wizard on the KR1, I quickly get to a screen called "WAN Settings". I believe these field are populated from the card?!? They show a username of "KR1"; a hidden password; a server-name "verizon" and a dial-number of "#777".
I need training here - am I "dialing" the Alltel network or am I connecting to the verizon network? (are they the same?)
Alltel's version of Quicklink Mobile shows me whether I'm connecting to EVDO or to 1x or to QNC. I'm led to believe that if I am forced to connect to the slow speed network I will be billed for connect time (not the case with "broadband" or the 144kb 1x). Quicklink Mobile also show be data flow in a nice little graph - I miss that.
Enough rambling - my questions are:
Is there a way to determine what network to which I'm connected?
Can I determine traffic flow (besides this - http://delphi.about.com/od/fullcodeprojects/l/aa112903a.htm)
Should I change the WAN setting? Am I connected to Verizon?
So much I don't know about this --
Thanks

I'm on Alltel too.
I've been fiddling with this thing all day and can't get it to go Wi-Fi. I'm no pro with this stuff!!
Anyhow, looks like the router is working and my laptops pick up the signal from it but I can't get a network set up to work. For a while I could at least get to the internet w/ the LAN, but now that won't work either.
Any suggestions on where to get better directions for setting this all up and getting networked? I'm trying to connect the router to a desktop w/ the ethernet cable and use Wi-Fi on 2 laptops to connect.
I'm about to pull my hair out and have resorted to an old dial-up connection to look for help. I"m THAT desperate.
thanks,
Tammy |

Not sure what you mean --
"For a while I could at least get to the internet w/ the LAN"
Were you using the router? Assume you mean the ethernet connected pc did have access. I've a few dropped connections (I guess - since I don't have the Quicklink Mobile window, it's tough to know because my router is hidden in a drawer) and repowering the KR1 fixed the problem. I'm also using an outdoor mobile antenna that has really helped my reception problems. Without that antenna, EVDO was iffy.
As to the wifi problem, is this your first wifi router? If so, make sure encryption is set the same on all devices. Also DHCP. Messing with IP sure is fun, isn't it?

I had the ethernet cable connected to the lap top when I went to do the initial setup w/ the router wizard, etc. I could get to the internet, but as soon as I disconnected the cable, no more internet. That's why I think the issue is my network set up.
My wi-fi is picking up the a strong signal, I just can't get it configured.
This is my first wi-fi router. First router of any kind actually since I've had dial up only where I live, until switching to the Alltel. I have a pretty good signal with it most of the time from home.
I'm glad to hear it works for you though...I know now that the problem is ME!! LOL |

I was waiting for the Alltel users to crop up. And I got here before Zorog!
Alltel requires a username and password to connect to their network. Verizon and Sprint do not. This is what the WAN (EVDO) page is for. Here are the steps to do it:
- Enter your username as phonenumber@alltel.net.
- Enter your password as alltel.
- Enter the password again.
- Enter the server name as Alltel
- Leave the dial number as #777
This isn't covered in the documentation that was shipped with the routers you guys have but we're working on that. |

I know exactly what you mean Tammy. I spent 7 hours on mine last night trying to get it to work. I couldn't even get to the router configuration at http://192.168.0.1. NOTHING! If you have a alltel aircard like me, the phone light will not light up and the wlan light will flash. It's that dad-blasted configuration menu that seems to be nowhere.
This is how I did it. I went to the trouble-shooter on page 43 of the acrobat file on the CD that came with the router. The paper setup booklet doesn't have a trouble-shooter. I did the ping test and learned that I didn't have the right ip address. I right-clicked LAN connection and changed the properties of the "interntet properties TCP/IP" to "obtain an ip address automatically" and "obtain DNS server automatically." After that, I re-entered the ip address in the address bar and the configuration menu came on. I then went through the acrobat manual and configured it exactly as it showed with the exception of not changing any of the mac settings. I don't have a mac computer. Don't know what that stuff meant so didn't want to risk it.
I didn't mess with any of the alltel stuff like someone else said they did. The manual said the alltel card would automatically configure that stuff and not to mess with it. So, I didn't mess with it.
My alltel aircard was connecting at 128kbs in my laptop. It's connecting at 512kbs in the router for the desktop. I'm connecting at 24-56mbs wireless to the router on my laptop. The speed is a lot faster.
Good luck! I hope this helps.

I finally got it all connected last night. I'm not entirely sure WHAT I did that fixed it, but I rebooted the laptop and it came up and connected right away!!
So glad it's working. The other laptop connected right away after that finally too.
My only issue, is when it drops and I get the red light. Is there anyway to get it restarted aside from unplugging the routher? That is the only thing I've been able to figure out and it usually connects pretty quickly after doing that.
Thanks!

Makieman -
Eventhough I'm an Alltel customer, I can still log on to the Verizon network!!!??? I kindof hate to change my WAN settings from KR1 to "phonenumber@attltel.net" because it currently works very good.
Is there anyway to determine what network and speed I'm connected to?
Thanks

When you use your EVDO PC card that is provisioned and activated on the Alltel network, you are always logging into the Alltel network. Yes, you can roam on Verizon's network for 1X data connections but not for EVDO. The router does not do this configuration; your card does. That field in the WAN (EVDO) page is just a name for the configuration. But if it ain't broke...don't fix it.
As mentioned in a couple of other threads, we're working on a basic signal strength indicator right now. It will be available via firmware upgrade. |

Just so you guys know, you need to have your computers set up to request DHCP connections and not using a static IP address. This will help you tremendously when trying to do the intial setup.
To answer your question, the router should eventually recover if the connection fails. If you want to restart the router without pulling the power, you can log into the router GUI and navigate to the Tools tab > Misc. There is a button there to reboot the router. |

That was the problem that held up the release of the router. It's a bug with the D-Link WiFi module that kills the router. D-Link claimed it was because the laptop was too close to the router, thus overloading the WiFi antenna. Verify that you have the latest firmware, and keep checking back to the Kyocera KR1 support page for firmware upgrades until they get that fixed.

OK, all - as far as the ALLTEL issues: (by the way, very funny, Mackieman... )
The UserId and logon stuff is completely ignored by the router for EVDO service (I have not tried it with 1X). In fact, you could change the User ID to Mickey Mouse at Disney.com and it would still work, because the UserID comes from the card, and is not over-written by the router settings. Try it if you don't believe me.
Once your card is configured on a laptop, the router will work out-of-the-box without changing any ANY settings. I just sent out 20 of these, and all worked perfectly out of the box.
I'm guessing it should be the same with all Carriers, not just ALLTEL, since that should be a KR-1 thing, not a Carrier thing. (But this is just an educated guess.) |

We are one of the many customers who were automatically switched to Alltel from Cellular One when they merged. My 11-year-old son called #777 from one of our cell phones the other day, but won't admit to what he did. I called Alltel, and the guy in tech support didn't have any idea what that number is. He suggested I "Google" it. That's how I ended up here. That phone said he was connected for over 2 minutes, but when I tried to call from my phone, it said the call couldn't be completed as dialed. Can someone tell me what he did? _________________ Laura |
