We're working on a very basic signal strength indicator for the current version of KR1. This will be available via a firmware upgrade. The next version of the product hopes to have a full-featured indicator.
A battery pack is still in the works but as mentioned in the power thread, finding one that is compatible and stable is a bit of a challenge.
Hot swap and card activation/OTASP in the router is a goal for the next version of the product; it will not be available for KR1.
| Quote: | | 3. USB port tweaks. Mainly to disconnect my iPod so I can listen to it while it is being charged (disconnect/detach anything unrecognized). Support one (probably D-Link) bluetooth device (maybe to bluetooth EVDO phone). Web cam/mic? There has to be a way... |
What do you mean by port tweaks? Charging your iPod through the USB interface on KR1 isn't specified and isn't supported. Bluetooth is an idea but I'm not seeing a huge push for it because that profile is disabled in most BT-enabled phones.
Also, while the card has a data call up and is in traffic, reading from the COM port is darn near impossible. There are ways around this but they are particularly difficult to implement with limited resources available on a router. We're still looking into it though. |

The two things I would love:
1. As mentioned before, dual or tri WAN (PC Card, one or two ethernet ports, USB phone). This would increase the convenience during a "DSL outage or Cable Modem outage" when at home with the card. Failover, load sharing, whichever, but something.
2. A captive portal for each newly detected wireless ID. Nothing fancy, no stored accounts necessary, just password protection on the connection. I'd love to run this in unencrypted mode with a login screen, for guests of my apartment (or car), as well as the bar downstairs. A configurable screen (text written by user) would be a plus (e.g. to shame people into not abusing the connection.

PS - got the unit Michael, thanks. might want to drop a note into the box about the V620 slot issue. |

If anything, it will have a single RJ-45 WAN port that can do automatic failover; no load balencing.
Captive Portal is something that one of the KR1's competitors supports and I think it's an interesting idea. |

Ok, if there's automatic failover, there should be some sort of hysteresis control, esp. for those of us using VPNs or SSH long-running connections. Nothing's more fun than having to restart your vpn/ssh sessions every 10 seconds because the WAN keeps flipping back and forth.
A simple Captive Portal would be a great privacy curtain (only slightly less secure than WEP against real hackers!) which would be way easier for non-technical users who are used to university and coffee shop open systems. "I'm connecting...oh, look an invitation/warning about this connection..." and a) they stay off it or b) if they know the owner, the owner gives them a password.
Right now, I keep unplugging the KR1 when visitors with laptops aren't visiting, and plugging it back in when they are here (it is currently set to no encryption).
And for your next product: how about a front panel mounted powerswitch or WAN-disable switch?
Thanks for the consideration of the ideas, btw.

My wish on the list would be for the price of the KR1 be reduced back down to $199. _________________ EVDO Addict. |

VPN or a way to bridge to a VPN router like a SonicWall.

I posted these in another thread before I bumped into this one...
Here's my needs for the KR1 and a KPC650:
- Need some kind of Signal Strength indication (I see many postings on that one).
- Really need to be able to update PRLs via the KR1. (I see that's been mentioned once or twice).
Thanks to the folks at Kyocera for the KR1, I've needed this solution for quite some time. |

| Let me second that signal strength, however it would be better on the KPC650 itself. Or a direct LED indication on the front panel (maybe red-yellow-green instead of bars). If I don't want to open some proprietary application, (and even then I get just bars unless I "hover" over the indicator) I have no way of determining the signal strength. And if I have an antenna, I may not be easily able to see the screen while trying to position it. |

| I want to add my vote for supporting the PPC6700. I could use the KR1 for special events several times a year. Does anyone know of any other Sprint phones that are currently supported? |

I don't know if this has been covered. Can I plug a slingbox into the KR1 and distribute the TV to my 802.11g PC's ? _________________ Did you ever stop to think .... and then forgot to start again? |

I just looked up what a Slingbox is, very interesting product.
I would think that you could use the KR1 like a normal router/switch. Did you intend to have the Sling and PCs on the LAN side of the KR1? The outgoing EVDO speed to the WAN may be a problem for the streaming video. I didn't see a speed specification on the Sling WEB page but their screen example showed a data rate of 213K.
There is a reference to using the Sling with EVDO in the FAQ of the Sling WEB site.

I'm on a boat and thinking I could use the KR1 as a wireless distribution system for the TV antenna input. I don't need the evdo connection to distribute the TV signal but do need an 802.11g signal so I can watch TV on any of my PC's scattered about the boat and connected to the KR1 via 802.11g _________________ Did you ever stop to think .... and then forgot to start again? |

The KR1 is WiFi certified... so unless the Slingbox uses some strange protocols that the WiFi stack (or LAN switch) can't pass, your only limitiation would be bandwidth, and at 213kbps that shouldn't be an issue.
(ps- boater805... you seeing broadband speeds today? here in downtown ventura and only getting national access... no faster. too much EVDO use on the 101?) |
