cygwin on windows XP with minicom (and tftp) and Linux with minicom on my zaurus, but hyperterminal should also work.
The RS232-over-USB is beyond diagnostics - it could be used to upload the PRL or monitor the signal strength. The only reason I can't get it to work now is the VZManager wants to see both ports at once, but as I've noted, bitpim sees the "brew" filesystem just fine.
WARNING - when booting up there is a menu for reflashing including erasing. Don't hit any stray keys until you get a shell. |

My current setup:
http://homepage.mac.com/tz1/.Public/kr1.jpg
The bit of white tape over the KR1 status LED is because at night it is too bright without it.
The longer WiFi antenna is from radio-shack and should double the range over the original. For those who desire excess: http://www.hyperlinktech.com/web/24ghz_802.11_rubber_duck_antenna_9dbi_rsp.php (they also have a car-roof to RSMA and other parts).
My battery pack is on the right. The various radio shack adapter cords go to Y connectors for my Zaurus and GPS. I now can carry the KR1 and not lose the connection (or shut off my car when I don't have it in my jumpstart-battery outlet). Convienient when I'm listening to audio streams over the internet.
The KPC650 antenna wire goes to one of the $10 trucker antennas at my desk, and I have a rooftop version in my car. And the ARC for other areas.
You can see the three wires I extend out to the RS232 female connector (attached to a straight-through cord which goes to my PC, or I can use a male connector I have for my Zaurus when I am mobile). I haven't soldered them, but bent them so they should stay in. There is just enough room on the side of the PCMCIA opening to go out. |

| Hey... groovy sneak-through with the com1 cables! That's a perfect way to get a pigtail into the the KR1 for direct attachment to the miniPCI's U.FL connector. Could easily shave the side of the PC slot if you need more room. |

If I attach to that one instead, bitpim recognizes the brew-ish filesystem (including things like the PRL list) with the "generic CDMA modem setting" and the com port just like it does when I insert it directly into my PC. That port (or pins 2 and 3) is what goes to the "data" pins on the "diagnostic" connector - the not really USB port in back which is plugged. |
I see the filesystem in BitPim however how are you seeing the echoing of the control port? Also is this ttyS1? |

| The "echoing" between the KPC650 (or other card) and the serial port is done with a "diagnostic" program, visible via the ps command. |

So you're not actually seeing the output of the diagnostic program? Is certainly see it in ps. |

| I didn't explain very well. diagnostic is a two way copying program. It sets ttys1 to 115200, and opens /dev/ttyUSB1 and echoes any characters between the two ports. You can see it with "ps", but that just shows that it is running, and the parameters. If you shut it off, then both ports should be open or available. bitpim can talk to the card in a laptop OR via the serial port if diagnostic is running. I think "diagnostic" would be used to configure the card via a special cable or something. |

One annoyance that could be causing problems is klogd will send output to the serial console, so when the usb-ohci thing happens or other strange hardware event, the kernel will have to wait bogging things down. Wireless will seem not to work, and the web pages are served slowly if at all.
Killing klogd or adding a -c (perhaps late in the boot) might help it work more robustly. |
