PostPosted: Tue Jul 12, 2016 7:18 pm    Post subject: Which VZW 4G USB Modem/CTR500 Compatibility

It's been a while since I've posted and the forum looks pretty dead, but maybe someone lurking can help me out with this question.

I'm currently on a grandfathered 3G unlimited data plan which was worked fairly well in the past. Lately, my speeds have taken a nosedive and it has become unreliable to the point where it won't load pages consistently anymore. After going around and around with Verizon, it appears my only choice is to basically move on to something else.

I only have two options here, cellular based internet service from VZW, AT&T, and Cellcom, or satellite based internet. I really don't want to go the Satellite based way, so I'm thinking of changing over to the new VZW plan.

This brings me to my question.. I currently have a Cradlepoint CTR 500 and a UM175 hooked up to a Wilson Omni Trucker. I can pull a decent signal using the external antenna but marginal without. Since I would be changing to a 4G device, I am wondering what USB modem would work with my CTR 500 but also allow a connection to my antenna? I would prefer to buy used and save some money. I don't care if it's an older device, just that it's reliable and works well. It would be a bonus if it used the same adapter as my UM175.

I searched Cradlepoint's website for answers, but it appears that my router is too old to find an answer to this question.

I do have an old 4G Mifi Jetpack, but it doesn't have a Ethernet jack so I can't hook it up to my main Linksys router.

I've managed to partially answer my own question.. The USB 551L and the UML290 will work, what about the 295? I'm not sure if I have AWS Band 4 here or not to even take advantage of the 295's capability.

Wish I knew still on grandfathered 3g. What are you going to do about the data cap? I'm pulling 30-50 gb per month and would probably do more with decent speed, it's unaffordable with the caps. Several hundred dollars per month. I want to break free from this without losing my shirt. Cable company wants $86,000 to roll cable 1/16th of a mile down the road. This is the best speed I have had in a week: It's a real problem that people in the rural usa are getting left in the dark ages.

I know exactly what you mean. It's very annoying to hear people complain about their "slow" 4 meg DSL when I can't even get any land based internet service.

As far as my data usage goes, I average around 8-10 gb a month so the XXL plan should work ok as long as I don't start streaming any kind of HD video. I would love to keep my unlimited plan, but Alltel still owns the towers here and the 3g side of them get severely overloaded which brings my speed to a crawl during peak hours. When that happens, my download speed gets throttled to about .4 mbps and the only thing that will fix it is a call to Verizon to have them "refresh the network". That usually will resolve the issue, but that can last anywhere from a few hours during tourist season to months during the winter. I'm just so tired of having to call customer service all the time.. I just want my internet to work and at a reasonable speed!

I have a feeling that I'm not going to like being on a new plan other than the increased speed, but at this point I'm at a loss of what to do.

I keep hoping someone will expand their local wireless high speed service to my area or the phone company will upgrade their equipment in my area for DSL, but I've been hoping that for 13 years now. Mad

Here's what I'm dealing with this evening! My upload is unusually slow tonight (average .48 ) Evil or Very Mad

Yikes that is very slow. Been like that for me all weekend. I want to watch a movie and I tethered my 4g phone instead of using my crappy 3g unlimited. Took a screen cap and it says 306 kB/s which is about 2.5 mb/s. 2.5 is heart poundingly fast compared to 3g but not that fast compared to cable or fiber. I am sure some of it is my phone but its near a window, what else do they want?

Try to download stuff on 4g to get real world performance other than speedtest.net becuase I get speedtests in the 15-20 mb/s range but in practical purposes only 2.5 mb/s. Doesn't seem worth the cap for me. I can't stream anything but at least with my phone I can download a little if I want to and am pressed for time.

Either way let me know how it goes, i'm dying out here.

My modem should be here tomorrow but I don't know when I'm going to activate it. I've got two computers to install Windows 7 on, so that means lots of downloads which would blow though my data like nothing. I'll probably wait until both machines are up and running before I switch.

I would like to see what kind of speeds people get after they hit their data cap and activate safety mode. It's supposed to be 128 kbps, which should be serviceable to check email and do light browsing, but I would like to see some real world experience.

When I was calling in for a network refresh, I found out a bit of info about the safety mode on the new plans. When you run out of data they just drop you to 2g. From what I've read, it sounds like their advertised speed of 128kbps could be optimistic. Confused

Here's an interesting comparison by big red themselves: http://www.verizonwireless.com/news/article/2014/05/a-day-in-the-life-with-2g-speed.html

IIRC 2g = 1xRTT or slow as hell. Tmobile does this and i bought a day pass of data for them and a hotspot and sim card and lte antenna and all I could get was weak 3g and then once i hit the cap 1xrtt. It was worse than what I have now. I hope you have a better experience. I am at work now using the cable and vpn and speedtest says 25 mbps down. It is hard to go home to 1mbps if that. I never was able to get my movie. Even at 2.5mbps on my 4g phone it downloaded 1gb and then quit. So I wasted a gig of 4g for nothing. wireless internet blows.

Yes, wireless internet does blow! Mr. Green You'd think by now they would have things straightened out but it still can be a finicky technology.

So as an expensive experiment I activated the new 4g modem on a new line with 2gb of data so I can experience 4g speeds and also safety mode. Unfortunately the sim card I got with it was deactivated so they are sending me another one which should be here tomorrow or Wednesday.

I'll be sure to post my impressions and a speed test on 4g and in 2g safety mode.

Did you ever pull the trigger on the new 4g setup?

Yes I did, but of course things aren't going right. For some reason my modem is only connecting at 3G so they are sending me another sim card. I'm not very optimistic that the sim card is going to fix anything, though.

The USB551L does perform better than my UM 175 on 3G. I have pings around 50-60 and my upload speed is running around .75 mbps, something I never saw on a UM 175. Download speeds are the same.

For now, I'm still running my old 3G modem until the sim card comes, likely early next week.

My um175 died a while ago, now I use a novatel usb 720 (oooooh, ahhhhhh). I get three bars of 4g lte in my house, if only I could use it. Maybe the sim card will work man, try to be a little positive and maybe it will work out. Keep me posted about it and if you are able to stay under the cap. I have been just downloading at work where there is cable connection but it's a lame solution and I wish I had a high speed connection at home, it's 2016, there has to be a solution out there that doesn't involve forking over five figures I don't have or paying a few hundred a month for 4g capped. After ten years of evdo hell I am ready to get a shovel and dig the cable myself.

After playing around with it last night I managed to get it to connect to 4G after going into diagnostic mode in Access Manager and enabling LTE only. My signal was not very good and I only got a marginally better speedtest than 3G. I still haven't been able to get it to connect to 4G in my CTR500 no matter what I do.

I think I might mothball the USB551L and pickup a used MBR95 and a UML295. I really hate to spend the extra money but I just want to get this up and running and not spend hours on the phone with Verizon and screwing around with settings. This seems to be a proven setup from what I've read.

My CTR500 and UM175 have been working flawlessly for years!
