Hello All,

I'm about to jump into the EVDO arena and wanted to know if EVDO Rev A is firmware upgradeable for any existing cards. I would rather avoid buying a card in April, and watch as 3-6 months later Rev A cards come out. What do you folks consider the best card for offering the best signal coverage?

Thanks,
-Ben

EVDO Rev A requires a different chipset form QualComm and this requires a new card.

Do not expect to see anything in the next 3 - 6 months related to EVDO Rev A. QualComm JUST released sampling of this chip to the carriers. It will take them time to deploy it. I would guess at least 1 year away (mid to late 2006, possibly later).

If you are concerned, get a 1 year contract and that way you get to use EVDO now.

Hello Michael,

Thanks for the info. Out of the current card crop, which do you think perform best for signal coverage.

Thanks,
-Ben

I am in the process of trying to get all the EVDO cards, to better answer that question.

I have been testing the Sierra AirCard 580 lately and the software for it is fairly impressive. Verizon offers VZAccess, you can download software directly from Sierra Wireless. I am going to be updating EVDOinfo.com with dozens of screen shots from Sierra's software over the next week.

The latest Kyocera Press release says they are the best (of course, this is a press release).

Hello Michael,

Excellent, this is exactly what I'm looking for. I want tech details, PR is worthless...

Thanks and I'll keep my eye on EVDOinfo.com,
-Ben
