I'm not a IT guy, or even a tech savy person. Anyways, I've been delegate the task of upgrading the firmware on about 112 of these cradlepoint MBR-1400 v2s so that we can begin to use the sprint u341 usb modem instead of the sierra aircard 250u (both through sprint).

I've download the firmware from cradlepoint.com/firmware/MBR1400 (both options for every single version on that link!). I've logged into the cradlepoint admin page, gone to system settings/system software and tried to manually update the firmware via an upload. Nothing. It says that

Firmware header is invalid or is not intended for this product.

What am I doing wrong?

P.S. which mobile modem is better, the 250u or the u770 from QUALCOMM (3g/4g)?

If you purchased your routers from 3Gstore give our support department a call at 866-347-8673 Option 3 for assistance. They can assist you on getting the units to upgrade.

I'd also suggest looking at Cradlepoint's ECM service here - http://3gstore.com/page/144_cradlepoint_enterprise_cloud_manager_enterprise_license.html

ECM is a central cloud interface that would save you a ton of time. You could literally push the firmware update to all 112 devices in a few minutes, rather than manually doing all the units one at a time.

Modem wise the U770 does support the newer LTE network where the 250U only supports up to 4G WiMAX. Ideally I'd recommend looking at the Sprint modem cap insert here - Sprint 3G/4G Modem Cap

Here is a great read on why embedded is preferred over USB - http://www.evdoinfo.com/content/view/4530/64/

As a follow up to Matts comments. When you are manually downloading firmware from Cradlepoint, you'll see a note above the files. This instructs you to click through to another set of firmware files depending on the hardware version you have. The wrong firmware file will create that message.

From their site:
"Firmware Downloads & Release Notes

Viewing firmware for MBR1400. To select a different product, choose another using the form at the bottom of this page.

If you have MBR1400 HW v2.0, download firmware HERE

How do I know if I have MBR1400 HW v1.0 or HW v 2.0?"

Hopefully that helps!

Thank you for the input! I've begun pushing the firmware to the routers now.

I've ran into a problem though with the usb modems. The netgear 341U is working (and its fast!). The u770 and 250u are now not working. Does the MBR1400 v2 only allow one type of connection at a time? I.e. 3G, 4G or LTE, not a combination of the connections?

Thank you for your kind attention!

EDIT: Nevermind! I didn't have load balancing on for the 341U modem!

By default on the CradlePoint home page the firmware is defaulted to Version1, you must select Version 2.
