Verizon Wireless has announced the latest addition to their lineup of 4G-capable devices: the Novatel MiFi 5510L 3G/4G hotspot (AKA "Jetpack"). Like their other popular hotspots, the 5510L acts as a WiFi hotspot for up to 10 devices and features a built-in battery that lasts up to eight hours for on-the-go internet access. The 5510L also features capacitive buttons for quick access to certain functions, real-time data usage reports, WEP/WPA2 and VPN support.

More details, pricing, and availability should be available soon - stay tuned!

We are getting one in for testing early next week and we can determine a lot more about:

- tether support
- external antenna support
- extended battery support (already working with our manufacturer overseas to add an extended battery for the JetPack 5510L)

More to come next week.

No external antenna ... what a bummer.

Good reason to buy a 4620LE while they are available. Having the ability to use an external antenna and RF booster far outweighs any benefits from the new Novatel modem.

Novatel saves 10 cents in the manufactured cost and screws its customers in areas with limited cell towers. My only Verizon tower is 4.5 miles away. The next closest ones are on the other side of a range of hills and too low to connect to, though fine for the motorists driving down the highway they line.

That is the problem with 3G/4G - the towers are located to serve motorists. If you live any distance from a major highway there are not going to be any towers near enough to get a signal.

I agree with you 100%. Read some of the customer reviews at this page:

http://3gstore.com/product/3047_3g4g-full-band-outdoor-omni-antenna.html

Click Customer reviews and search on MiFi and you will see reviews like this:

We live in a rural area. I had crappy and SLOW 3G connection to Verizon with MiFi 4620L. Mounted this on my roof and connected to WiFi and now we get 3 to 4 bars at 4G. Amazing, now we can watch NetFlix and also remote desktop to my office is tolerable with no more delays. For the price, this is a must have and I will recommend to my neighbors!

Skipping the antenna port is short sighted and I agree, get the 4620 vs the 5510, so that you have options later to improve your signal (if needed)

Verizon lost me as customer because of it. Sad

I went to AT&T and the elevate which actually has 2 external antenna ports. The external antenna port is what makes all the difference for signal at my house. Smile
