PostPosted: Fri Jan 04, 2013 11:38 am    Post subject: 3G vs 4G data usage - how much do you use?

A new study shows that LTE users consistently use more data than 3G users (read more here). This isn't particularly surprising since the zippy LTE speeds make using your phone or data device for bandwidth-intensive activities like YouTube, Netflix, Pandora, or online gaming more accessible (and of course the less time you're waiting for pages to load or videos to buffer, the more you can do online), but we'd love to hear if it holds true for you!

How much data do you use each month? If you've upgraded from 3G to 4G, have you seen your usage increase?

Figured I'd chime in since I have both( Unlimited on 3G and 4G).

Just checked my December VZ bill :

3G USB Modem on the MBR95- 7.9 Gig
4G Hotspot/Data on my Droid Bionic ( with some Wifi as Wan on the MBR95)-4.2 Gig
4G Data on two other Droids ( wife and son combined)- 5.4 Gig

Would love to see where everyone else is.....

Ho! Ho! Ho! about 18 months ago my service with Verizon Wireless was upgraded from 3G to 4G. On 3G I had never gone over my 5GB cap. The first 2 months with 4G it was almost impossible to stay under the cap. The good news was the fee for exceeding it went down to $10/GB. I was on an older 3G contract and the fee was 25 cents a MB--a whopping $250 GB! Now that the novelty of being able to watch animations and u-tubes and movies and download big files has waned I am able--just barely, to stay under the cap--but I visit My Verizon daily to check my data usage. Accelerated Verizon LTE rollout is a plot to get folks to exceed their paltry data allowances..........M.S.

Back when I had unlimited 3G and it worked right I never went over 20 gbs for the month. Now it is usually 80-100 gbs a month on strictly 4G.

How can I achieve this? I am on grandfathered 3g and can only receive verizon signal and they don't offer unlimited 4g to new accounts. Especially since 3g is going to be done away with soon, I would love a solution where i can use as much data at the same speed as you.

Not sure if you can do it anymore. You used to be able to do an AOL of someone's account if they had a phone based plan and not a modem based plan. I don't think Verizon will do AOL accounts anymore unless you have a businesses plan.

23 to 31 GB of 3G usage on my grandfathered unlimited 3G account every month. I have a VZW USB760 attached to my CradlePoint MBR95. Leave it connected 24/7. Sure wish I could find unlimited 4G.

The three ways you can still get an unlimited account from what I heard are:
1. Already have an account with unlimited on it and AOL another account line(s) to your account. I don't know if having a 3g unlimited account would work for this.
2. AOL an account to a new account if you don't already have a plan with unlimited data on it and convert to a business account. Additional fees apply for setting up the business account.
3. AOL an unlimited account from a relative willing to give up the line.
Those are the three ways I have seen to still do an Assumption of Liability on Verizon that don't remove the unlimited data feature when transferring the account. Any of those can change at anytime with Verizon, so you better be prepared to lose the feature or be out the cost of the plan being sold. Basically, the AOL process has been almost eliminated.
