I have a 17" G4 PowerBook, and am running OSX 10.3.9
As I mentioned on another board, I am now in need of dependable, (preferably high-speed) wireless access from anywhere.
My provider of choice is Alltel. If I purchase the Kyocera "Passport" PC card from them...Will I be able to install it on my Mac?
Will their service work for me?
In areas where they are not yet offering broadband coverage, will I at least be able to get online (albeit at dial-up speeds)? I'm really hoping that this will provide a viable solution, but I'm hesitant to pull the trigger until I hear definitively that their service will be compatible with my computer.
Thanks! |

Will I be able to install it on my Mac? - Yes, see other threads on this forum to setup up your Mac with a Kyocera 650 card.
Will their service work for me? - Sure, if you are in their coverage area, and 1X speeds elsewhere.
In areas where they are not yet offering broadband coverage, will I at least be able to get online (albeit at dial-up speeds)? - 1XRTT speeds (average 50-70K, max burst 153K).
Hope that helps! |

For what its worth, I also have a PowerBook 17 running 10.4.4. Have you considered Sprint or Verizon?
I just got Sprint EV-DO one week ago through EVDOinfo.com. They activated my card and sent a Mac OS X disc with Merlin S620 card drivers. It all works! I chose Sprint over Verizon due to their PowerVision phone service. The jaws really drop when I whip out my phone and start watching Fox News Channel live -- while in the elevator (no live video from Verizon -- only loops).
I have downloaded music from iTunes, VPN'd into work, and used Apple Remote Desktop to control another Mac miles away. I would note there is a half second or so lag time. Last night I scored a 1.9MBit download speed. Your enjoyment will be based on how good your EV-DO coverage is. I called Sprint and asked them to check the address of the building I would be using EV-DO the most in (they checked something called the "impact database" -- I don't trust any coverage map). Now I can't find anywhere which doesn't have EVDO in my area. Good luck |

Hello gbshuler,
Glad that it is working so well for you.
I have been out of town using EVDO a lot more than normal, and for those that are traveling for business (or pleasure), it is great always being connected.
I can even print remotely to my office printer, if needed.
I am always testing Verizon and Sprint, wherever I go, and I am usually impressed with the speeds of both. The WORSE place to benchmark EVDO, is at an airport, when there has been a weather delay. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |
