The new BlackBerry 7130e supports tethering, but none of the new devices (700w or xv6700) support tethering.

Interesting read about the Treo 700w and tethering. Yes, there are hacks that allow most devices to work, BUT you risk getting billed, cancelled or Verizon cutting it off. However, now it seems, that Verizon representatives are announcing that tethering will be here later in 2006.

Quote:
According to Verizon, the Treo doesn't currently meet requirements they specify for their network. Russ Brankley, director of data network services for the cellular operator, said that the company hopes to enable modem functionality for the Treo in the third quarter of 2006 and expects, but would not commit, to the fix being backward compatible with existing units.

More Limits: Verizon Prevents Treo Use As 3G Modem

My guess, is Verizon will need to do this earlier in the year vs. later in the year. For the user who needs occasional access, tethering a PDA or phone makes a lot of sense. Sprint already offers this - it is just a matter of time before Verizon does.

Not only does Verizon need to offer the ability ASAP, they need to offer it at a competitive rate...

Quote:
That means subscribers who buy the Treo 700w and a $50 monthly subscription for EV-DO service on that device must purchase a second subscription for $60 monthly, plus an EV-DO card to access the Web using a laptop.

Yowza. Sprint offers unlimited EVDO on the phone for $15-$20/month or $25/month for unlimited on phone and tethering includes 40MB with a per KB charge to $70/month cap. If not used often, you'll only get $25 charge some months, which could average less than a $60/month laptop card.

What are the rates for BlackBerry tethering?

I was kind of expecting a quick response from you Smile

We are all aware that your company absolutely kills Verizon in this area. My point was that Verizon needs to change and that they may be going in that direction.

Here is the pricing:

Quote:
With BroadbandAccess Connect, customers can use their BlackBerry 7130e as a modem for downloading large documents to a laptop at speeds averaging 400 to 700 kbps on Verizon Wireless' BroadbandAccess service that covers more than 140 million Americans in 171 major metropolitan markets. BroadbandAccess Connect is available for $15 with any Verizon Wireless BlackBerry voice and unlimited data plan beginning at $79.99; or $30 with the purchase of a BlackBerry data-only plan for $49.99.

Hey now, I don't work for Sprint. But I do have a pref for them based on analysis not bias. Smile

Looks like the BB rates are competetive.

Just to clear this up a bit. The $15 charge is in addition to the $45 charge for the PDA Broadband Access Unlimited. The 7130e is currently the only device that has the internal ability to kill tethering if the extra $15 feature is not on the account.

At that point you are being charged the same as a aircard with the only advantage being you can turn the feature on or off at anytime without being stuck in a contract. (vs. the aircard being its own line of service and having the two year agreement.) But it really stinks having this wire coming out of your notebook vs. a nice clean PC card. Oh and it ties up your phone... Oh and when someone calls it kills your data conneciton.

Yes, all these things are extremely annoying.

There is a hack for 6700 here... But beware as Verizon doesn't officially support it and may charge usage.

I'm puzzled by this thread.

I selected the XV6600 because Verizon Wireless Tech Support told me that it was the only one for which they officially support tethering. I used Bluetooth tethering out of the box, and I downloaded wmodem for USB tethering.

I have the $45/month unlimited EVDO plan. The phone works well as a modem in both EVDO and 1x areas. No hacking of the phone was required.

Quote:

Verizon Wireless Verizon made waves with offering the first minutes-only 3G access with their NationalAccess network (using 1xRTT). Now, Verizon will offer EV-DO pricing that matches their aircard plans. Verizon has turned on similar tracking technology that is used in Sprint phones, and will deny EV-DO tethering to users that do not have the $60/unlimited plan on their account.

However, Verizon's implementation of the system is lacking in many areas. First, Bluetooth tethering is not permitted. On some phones, Bluetooth DUN has been blocked, on others, it is not. We can confirm that on phones such as the un-updated Motorola E815 (with original firmware) that the ability to tether without the $60 plan remains intact. Others have found that with simple commands sent to their LG VX8000/8100/9800 that Bluetooth DUN can be enabled as well.

The Treo 700w does not support tethering currently, and the XV6600/XV6700 will be able to continue tethering (with their existing PDA plans).
