It looks like they have finally addressed the Auto-update issue. It actually works now. This has the system select option (RTT, DO, Hybrid). Go get guys!

Great Job Sprint!

This firmware update will solve the "EVDO ping pong" problem for many many users.

After doing the update, you will now have a new option called Mode. In mode, you can leave at the default of Automatic, or select EVDO Only or 1xRTT Only. For those bouncing between EVDO and 1xRTT (and having to return/cancel or not use their card), this now gives users the options to block out 1xRTT and ONLY listen to EVDO.

Has anyone able to do this with Verizon? I tried what Michael suggested and Verizon tech unable to seperate broadband from national access. I use Novatel S620 air card.

I have a Verizon Wireless, Novatel V620... and a BoosterAntenna. The Antenna is great, although I wish the adapter cable was longer... anyone know where to get an extension or longer one? OR, what are the names of the connectors on each end and I'll make one?

A way to shut off 1xRTT would be great on this card.

Booster antenna uses FME connecters. Good place for cable is www.eur-am.com . They have ready made cables there

On the Verizon side, they currently do not support locking in to EVDO on their current cards. There is a way to lock in on the Verizon PC5220 card, if it has the old firmware.

http://www.evdoinfo.com/Tips/PC_5220/Sniffing_Out_New_EVDO_Towers_with_a_PC5220_20050531297/

You can probably pickup a PC5220 pretty cheap on eBay and then activate your account on the PC5220 for testing. However, it needs to be the older firmware in order to support this mode.

Since Verizon and Sprint use the same cards (for the most part), hopefully, Verizon will enable this feature in a future firmware upgrade.

Now, if Verizon would get smart (like Sprint did), and offer this as a feature in their VZAccess software - they would actually have many more satisfied customers.

Thanks for following up and glad it is working for you.

You guys are great for learning how this evdo works. Like some ppl here I have the issue where I connect great for a time, then all of a sudden two weeks ago, I start bouncing between EVDO and RTT, its unusable at times, disconnecting me constantly. I have been reading into the antenna stuff but I fell my signal is great, 3 to 4 bars inside my house with no additional antenna. Is there any word on support from Alltel about software to disable or toggle the hybrid mode ? I do not travel with this, it only serves me at my house because of lack of Broadband support in rural areas.

current set up is:

Dell Latitude D810
Kyocera 650
3 or 4 bars of signal most days.

Live in rural area 40 mins west of Charlotte NC, well within the evdo network coverage.

Thanks for any help.

Todd

Verizon PC5740 in a fixed location.

Was working perfectly for 3 months, suddenly lost BA signal and started going to NA. Verizon determined that my card was defective. Sent me a new one and it did the same thing. I determined that something had changed on their network. Eventually they did admit that "work" was being done in my area and that the NA tower had more signal strength where I was. I told them "easy fix then, turn up the power on the EVDO tower I used to connect to". Of course they said that was easier said then done, and my repsonse was pretty clear "not if you are interested in keeping me as a customer". 2 days later BA was fixed in my area. I called back to ask "what changed". They could not tell me.

I guess the point here is, if you complain, something may change...just thought I would share.

Good for you. If only everyone could get that kind of support response! "Hello Verizon, yes I live in a rural area (just me and the cows) and don't get any signal... could you turn up the signal full-blast and add EVDO to your tower please?" :]

Those of you with PC5740 cards really depend on good local signal. Without an external antenna port your only means of increasing signal are to move, ask for more signal, or use a signal amp and clamp-on adapter.

Clamp-on adapters are really just small antennas that clamp on the end of your PC5740... they work *ok* but not nearly as well as direct antenna/amplifier connection. They require a powered signal amplifier to greatly boost the signal (which requires AC/DC power), so there is a cost/configuration overhead that other cards do not incur.

PC5740's work fine in good signal areas, but the initial low cost could mean some limitation if you ever need to increase signal.

Glad to hear Verizon took care of you. They certainly aren't forthcoming with system maintaince/problems (I don't even think they tell their customer support people what's up) but they do seem to fix things quietly when you complain. I don't object to a few hours or even 1 whole day of down time every few months. Afterall, everything needs fixing and maintainance now and then. Anytime I have expereinced prolonged periods of downtime (over 24 hrs or multiple days of multiple hour) I have called verizon, reported the problem and explained that "I pay a premium price for a premium serivce and expect it to be just that, PREMIUM. They have cheerfully given me a 30 day credit each time this has occured (4 times in the past 18 months). So long as they continue to provide premium service and stand behind it with credit when it fails to live up to its "premium" status I will be a loyal customer.
