Michael,I live a short distance from you in the Chesterton,IN area and I experience the ping pong effect badly with my s620.In fact it is so bad that I actually end up getting disconnected or the signal locks between the switch and am unable to use it at all for a few minutes or until I disconnect and start over. This is a continual problemI have at home.I also have a store in Lakestation,IN where I experience the same prob.If I go 5 more miles west..no prob. There are only a few spots where I get this effect, but it is a major problem when it happens.I am constantly demoing this product to new customers and it stinks when it does not work while trying to sell them this product. If we can somehow get Novatel or Sprint to include the option of setting the service type,it would be a great thing.I would not mind if I only had 1X RTT service at home...just want to be able to stay connected. _________________ Radar2k4 |

Response From Sprint
| Quote: | | We are updating the Novatel Connection Manager to support the DO, Hybrid, or 1xRTT only modes. SW version is already out. Novatel should be on the auto-update server sometime next week and posted on the download part of the website sometime soon after that. Should see another small throughput increase when in DO only mode since in Hybrid mode the device will stop and check the 1xRTT network every 5 seconds or so. Bottom line, we are trying to give more controls over to the user so they can “hop-up” their user experience to meet their specific needs. |
|
Since Sprint is coming out with a new Connection Manager and is willing to help out with support on this site, it would be cool if they could provide a beta for registered users of this site.
Michael, you should attempt to negotiate beta testing with Sprint. They win by having broader testing, we win by getting to try the latest, especially if some are having problems such as this. |

hello everyone - my first post. what a GREAT forum! a wealth of "intel" here! i have learned a ton in the last 2 hours.
i use a Kyocera 650 card with the Verizon EVDO service and the Kyocera external antenna. I am in a fringe area that bounces back and forth between EVDO and 1X (syracuse, ny area).
any way i can "force" access manager to EVDO only???
thanks! |

First I hate to break this too you but the antenna Kyocera is selling is not really that effective. The antenna from Booster-Antenna is much more effective. You could also go with a directional external antenna like our yagi and aim at the tower giving you broad band . An Amplifier would certainly get the job done.
Regarding your question I do not believe the software with v620 will allow you to lock on Broadband only . The only card I am aware of that does that is the 5220.
Good Luck |

thanks maximum - at the time i bought it , i was not aware of any alternatives like i am now...when i get the $$, i am going to try the antenna you suggested.
having said that, i actually get a very noticable improvement with that kyocera antenna.
with no external, i am pretty bad with a RSSI about -91
with the external in the left "black" port (the port its "supposed" to be in...), i am around -86
with the kyocera external in the right "white" port, i sit pretty solid at -79
seems to work best in the port that disables all antennas except itself.
those numbers there are pretty solid and vary little. the difference is very noticeable with it in the "white" port --- and certainly VERY noticable compared to not having it all. |

Ray32 -
You can also take your card back to the Carrier and ask them to disable "hybrid mode" with the KPST (each service center should have one).
Upside - you will get slightly better EVDO, anywhere between 5 and 17% faster throughput, depending on your local network "slot cycle index" setting.
Downside - you will never get 1X, which may be a problem when you are mobile.
This would be in addition to the antenna advice posted by my esteemed colleagues. (They specialize in that stuff.) |

Bump ^
Michael,
Can you have your Sprint contact take a look at the Auto-Update issue I posted the other day?
Also,
Can you check if we can get a link to the version that they are updating for manual control or some way to get on the Beta group.
Thanks for your help.

I downloaded an update on the comm. mgr. software from the Sprint site today but not sure which version I've got but do get the dbm #'s next to the connection.
I know this was mentioned earlier, but what is the sequence to get into the comm.mgr and restrict to EVDO?
Also, my signal strength numbers really so South in a rain storm. I'm currently using the Sierra 580 card. Any suggestins for an external antenna with this card?
Thanks again for the help. |

BTW, what is the min dbm figure to get a decent EVDO connection?

A good omni directional mounted outside . Like a trucker antenna . Even better with an amplifier |

I have a KPC-650 card on a Mac. Outside the house, when I connect to the network, the VZAcces Manager indicates a broadband connection, with average 3 bars on 4.
If I am inside the house, I connect as a National Access connection, with about 2 bars on 4.
Now if I connect outside and then walk inside, or the connection drops or I stay connected, the VZAcces Manager saying "broadband connection". But in reality, am I connected and invoiced as broadband or have I been switched automatically to 1X-RTT and beeing invoiced as such? it appears this is the case... |

The house seems to have something in the construction materials blocking the EVDO signal so the card is reverting back to 1xrtt . The card looks for the EVDO signal first . When that cannot be found it picks up the 1xrtt . The solution is a a Good Omni Directional antenna mounted outside connected to a Dual Band amplifier inside that is connected to the card . This should solve your problem |

I just wish we had the update needed to manually switch modes on the S620.I have full signal...not even fluctuating and have a hard time staying connected to anything longer than 5 minutes.I should not have to have an antenna to use my card with full signal!!!Just keeps bouncing and disconnecting! _________________ Radar2k4 |

Novatel 620
Heard there is away to change card to only look for EVDO towers using diagnostics. Don't know how to do this, maybe a guru out there can figure it out. Users can change this setting back and forth as needed.
Sprints new connection manager will have this ability. Guess there is a firmware problem to solve before it will be released. |
