KR1 Need To Password Protect to Prevent Open WiFi

The KR1 out of the box is completely simple to use. Insert your EVDO Card, any existing Verizon or Sprint card that has already been PREACTIVATED in a supported computer and away you go. There is NO configuration, insert card and plug in power.

There is one draw back, your KR1 hotspot will be named "KR1" and completely unprotected for anyone within a few hundred feet to connect and use your connection. Obviously, you need to password protect the KR1 and change the administrator password (the administrator is the same for all as well). We will have more info after the KR1 ships, however, if you run the Wizard that you access from your browser, you can easily make these 2 changes. Failure, to do so, and your open hotspot may be used by many people nearby:

It is amazing that most major wifi routers are wide open out of the box. I can see that they want it to be plugnplay out of the box to reduce support calls but what is really surprising is that most allow (by default) managing the router over WiFi instead of requiring a hard-wired connection. They could at least turn off remote management, ask to change the default router password and add basic security when first managing it.

I can see 40-60 access points from where I live and about 25% are wide open. I sometimes connect to others w/out realizing it.

Crimony, Mike. Your thread title scared the crap out of me; I thought you found some problem with it.

Anyway, some of the higher-end consumer units from Netgear are coming with some level of WiFi access restrictions out of the box. The majority of products aren't and it's simply because of who their users are. Most folks here understand at least the basic ins and outs of networking; Joe Q. Consumer doesn't know anything and, to his discredit, has no desire to learn. He just wants it to work, so that is what he gets.

Just got mine and it works fine with Sprint S620 right out of the box. I did have to 'lift' the card to get into slot.

Be sure to Run Wizard and setup a password and key on the router.

Connected via web browser either through ethernet or wifi...

If you don't do this, anyone can not only use your router for access but can modify the router settings as well. You may regret not doing this if someone does P2P downloading on your account and you get a letter from the RIAA or MPAA.

You can just cut and paste whatever length of characters is desired, lessening the security as you go down in lenth of course.
