I received the following response today from Duel Systems regarding Mac drivers:

Quote:
Thank you for your inquiry to Methode/Duel Systems. Yes, we fully intend
on offering ExpressCard adaptor's that will have MAC compatible drivers as
well as Windows compatible drivers. We are in design and development of
these now and expect to have products in the near future.

Not sure what the "near future" might mean, but the prospect of Mac drivers sounds promising.

Interesting quote from Dell ExpressCard FAQ:

Quote:
When will ExpressCard Mobile Broadband cards be available from Dell?
We do not anticipate seeing mobile broadband ExpressCards available in market until later in 2006.
Dell plans to launch the Dell Wireless 5700 EVDO ExpressCard for use on the Verizon Wireless network around May/June.
Dell plans to launch the Dell Wireless 5510 3G HSDPA ExpressCard for use on the Cingular network in August/September

I would doubt this would be a Dell manufactured product, probably Sierra, Novatel or Kyocera. So, lets see what other announcements we have at the CTIA 2006 show coming up in April.

i recently spent a bit of 'quality time' with the representatives at my local verizon retail store.

the short story is, i ended up with a LG VX8100 phone and route data through it over bluetooth.

some of the implementation details:
* they told me that bluetooth would not work, and that using it as an internet connection is disabled on the phone.
* they sold me a usb cable to connect to the phone, which did not work (this will be returned)
* when i paired bluetooth with the phone, os x simply asked if i wanted to use that phone as my internet connection.

i haven't run any specific benchmarks, but the connection seems to be just as good as my novatel card in an EvDO area.

i hope this helps!

Looks like Apple may be offering Novatel ExpressCard drivers in an update to Mac OS X (due around when the Novatel ExpressCard ships). This is great news. Previously, Apple built drivers in 10.3.5 - 10.4.x for the PC5220 and it was a simple process to use a PC5220, everything you needed was built-in. If Apple does the same with these drivers, it will give MacBook users a simple way to use Verizon and Sprint.

I have heard conflicting info on this topic.

Not sure if Apple will have a software update to support the ExpressCard OR it will be included on CD when you purchase.

Here is what we do know:

1) Verizon will be the only carrier initially offering ExpressCards
2) Verizon is the only carrier that natively supports Mac, makes sense for them to have one for the MacBook
3) Looks like Dell will also be offering the Novatel card directly (Dell partners with Verizon for service).

Sprint is being agressive with their announcements at the CTIA show at the beginning of April - lets see what gets delivered later this year and when. Hopefully, ExpressCards are in the picture.

Has anyone heard anything about any EVDO speed loss with the Elan U132 USB Adaptor? It uses USB 1.1 but seams to be the first out on the market. I read they are supposed to start selling the end of this month. The other 2 the Novatel MCD3000 and the Sprint USB720 (Novatel with the Sprint name on it) will work with Mac OS and are USB 2.0. Novatel has no idea when they will be releasing their version, possibly a few months and the Sprint reps had no idea what I was talking about.

The really funny part about that write up at everything usb is : "you can improve your speeds by as much as three Dbi by using a USB extension cable" Don't they mean signal by three dbi?

I didn't know the first time I read this that it was a ReV A card which makes this a real possibility for many of us especially if the preformance compares and if it has a decent antenna port. I wouldn't bother upgrading if it was a Rev 0 card that I would have to upgrade again next year. The only downfall is the annoyance an extra object but the benifit of attaching it to a desktop w/o an adapter is a definite plus. Combine that with the delima over buying a new notebook w/ an express card slot. I don't know about everyone else but my wife and I both use the card and not having to worry about us both having the same slot on a notebook down the road is a definite plus.

While we await a more elegant solution, I got the Elan Digital Systems U132 USB Card Reader working with my Kyocera 650 PCMCIA Type 2 card on my MacBook’s XP partition.

Posted about it here:

Would love to see a OS X driver.

It is getting real close now....

Quote:
Novatel Wireless Announces Approval of the Industry's First Wireless Broadband PCI ExpressCard(TM)

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 19, 2006--Novatel Wireless, Inc. (Nasdaq:NVTL - News), a leading provider of wireless broadband access solutions, today announced it has received compliance approval on its Merlin(TM) ExpressCard(TM) XV620 from PCMCIA, a leading technology trade association for the ExpressCard(TM) and PC Card(TM) standards. This ExpressCard is the first PCI ExpressCard/34 solution available on the market that incorporates EV-DO technology (backward compatible with CDMA legacy technology) offering connection speeds to the Internet of up to 2.4 Mbps (megabits per second).

Novatel Wireless' new ExpressCard products address an urgent need presented by the mobile computing market. Many notebook manufacturers have commercially available products that incorporate a slot for this new standard, and many other manufacturers will soon be releasing notebooks that offer this slot. The ExpressCard standard is the next generation of PC card technology which allows notebook computer users to add new hardware capabilities

The solution meets the power and performance requirements of the ExpressCard module specification. The PCMCIA working group developed the next-generation ExpressCard specification to take advantage of the scalable, high-bandwidth serial PCI Express interface and USB 2.0 interface found on today's PCs.

Compliant systems and modules earn the right to display the ExpressCard logo that specifies the product is interoperable with other ExpressCard products and offers features such as plug'n'play installation and auto-configuration.

"Having a compliant ExpressCard/34 wireless WAN (WWAN) solution available is a significant achievement for today's notebook users," said Brad Saunders, chairman, PCMCIA. "Leading notebook developers have quickly incorporated ExpressCard slots into a broad range of their notebook products. Consumers have been pushing developers to deliver ExpressCard modules that offer wireless and other capabilities that leverage the performance enhancements offered by this new standard. We are excited that Novatel Wireless took an aggressive lead in bringing to the market the first compliant ExpressCard/34 WWAN module that proudly displays the ExpressCard logo, an energetic orange rabbit."

So it's not Rev A? A little odd to release a new Rev 0 card that will be quickly outdated.

Not really outdated, there are TONS of people waiting for an ExpressCard solution.

EVDO Rev A is not here today, or tomorrow or every by the end of the year (and some will say it may not be deployed fully for a year or two). It is important that people understand that an announcement doesn't equal reality, what is more important is what is available now (or around the corner).

Since this topic is on ExpressCards, lets keep it on topic.

I think the first carrier to release an ExpressCard will hit a home run (that is the #1 question we hear from customers every day).
