I've got a brand new CTR35 router with v3.3.0 software. My Pantech UML290 modem works fine on my laptop with VZAccess Manager connecting to 4G LTE on Verizon. The UML290 is running .242 firmware. As far as I can tell, the CTR35 doesn't even see the Pantech when the Pantech is plugged into the CTR35. It doesn't come up in any of the device menus.

Is there a way to reset the UML290 to factory defaults to see if that is a problem? I can't seem to find any way in the latest VZAccess Manager to set any settings on the UML290.

That sounds very strange. I use the CTR35 with a UML290 for my main internet at my house and the two work very well together.

Give this a shot:

Unplug the UML290 and power cycle your router.

Once the router reboots, log in, and pull up the system logs. (Click on "status" and then "system logs")

Plug the UML290 back in.

Wait a few seconds, check the "auto update box".

Watch the logs to see if they show any entries that look like they are indicating plugging anything into the router.

If you don't see anything like that in the logs, it's possible that you have a defective router. At that point, I would contact 3G store (if you bought it from them) or Cradlepoint for support to determine if the unit needs to be replaced.

You arn't one of those internet explorer version 9 victims are you?

IE9 in its native mode doesn't display Cradlepoint administrative pages very well. Either put IE9 into compatiblity mode or go use some reasonable web browser.

I'd also clear your web browsers cache, but that problem generally manifests itself in other ways.

Thanks for the replies. I'll give 3gstore a call. I'm using latest Firefox so that shouldn't be the problem. The log does not appear to show any activity when I plug the modem in or out.

Feel free to give us a call, we're here 9-5CST Monday - Friday and we can try and figure out whats going on for you. Out of curiosity have you tried to reload the firmware manually?

Sometimes they get a bad flash and simply reloading the firmware resolves the issue.

You mean reload the ctr35 flash manually? I shall try that tonight.

before you reload the firmware, save your settings, then reload firmware, then factory reset, then reload your settings.

If I may make a suggestion as well try placing a usb extension cable between the modem and router.

I had been testing with a USB extender cable. And with the UML290 plugged directly into the CTR35 - same result, no recognition. I re-flashed the 3.3.0 firmware. Same result. This time, I left all settings at factory default, and logged in via a wifi client. When I plug in the UML290, there are no new log entries at all. Presumably when a device is plugged into the USB port some sort of new log entry should pop up? I know the UML290 is getting power when I plug it into the CTR35 as its LED starts flashing red, then blue as it finds the LTE network.

Is there a way to manipulate settings on the UML290? My version of VZAccess Manager doesn't seem to have any modifiable settings for the UML290, or maybe I just don't know how to change or view settings.

This is quite frustrating - back in January, I bought a Nexaira BC II router, and that worked to the extent of finding the UML290, but it wouldn't keep the connection up for very long. I packed it all away waiting for some time to work on this again and for the firmware to get stable, so I took it out again last week - with new Nexaira firmware and UML290 firmware, I was hopeful, but same result.

So now I've got the CTR35, and that's even worse. I would suspect the UML290 except that it is solid on a laptop using VZAccess Manager. I'll phone 3Gstore Monday and try another unit I guess.

OK, so I went out and got a new Novatel 551L 4G modem. It worked right away with the CTR35. I think I can confirm with this that the CTR35 is simply not compatible with the Pantech UML290 running the latest firmware. It would be nice if the 3Gstore and Cradlepoint updated their info to reflect this.

My tale of woe continues however. Last night while having my new 551L modem plugged into my laptop doing some testing, a message bubble pops up in the notification bar saying a power surge has occured on the USB port. From that point on, my 551L can only connect to 3G service, 4G will not work. Back to Verizon to replace my 551L...

My CTR35 and UML-290 work flawlessly together. Both are current on the latest versions of their respective firmware. I don't think it's a fundamental incompatibility.

Good to hear you got things working with a different modem, hopefully you'll get all the bugs worked out soon.

Once again I can't get things to work. Now with the new 551L modem, it swaps very quickly from 4G down to 3G mode - it can't/won't keep a 4G signal.

I guess I should look into that 4G panel antenna and amplifier. Double sigh.

PostPosted: Thu Aug 22, 2013 4:46 pm    Post subject: Anyone with long term use info on UML290 - CTR35 combo Reply with quote

This thread has not been responded to in a while and no one followed up. I am interested in if anyone has used a Verizon 4G SIM in a Pantech UML290 plugged into a CradlePoint CTR35. I have read that this may be a viable alternative for a Mifi 4620 that may not be performing up to snuff. I know there have been firmware problems with both devices, but all commentary seems to have dried up on it. I am curious if everyone gave up and went to something else or if the firmware updates for the devices have resolved the problems.

Has anyone used the UML290 - CTR35 combo long enough to make a general comment on performance and reliability using the Verizon LTE service in a multi-city differential of traveling environments, and in particular expanding on how it compares to the MiFi 4620?

Thanks in advance.
