| Let's start with the bad: I would like to choose the carrier of my choice and the computer brand of my choice. In my case I prefer HP but I would use Sprint due to issues with Verizon's TOS and better EVDO coverage in the places where I travel. Being locked to one carrier would deter me from buying a certain brand of computers. |

I concur that embedded connectivity is a bad thing (even if not tied to a specific provider). It is far better money spent to provide an extra pcmcia slot to accept a card so that newest technologies can be added to the computer without junking the machine. I personally tend to keep my laptop at least 5 years (in fact this one is in year 4 and still is technically better than 90% of those on the market today). I'm not buying a laptop that locks in my connectivity to a technology that will almost surely be surpassed before the laptop itself is ready to be replaced. Would anyone buy a house with a built in stereo sound system that was hard wired and bolted in and nonreplaceable for the life of the house? _________________ Did you ever stop to think .... and then forgot to start again? |

Quite a few people in the embedded world want mini-PCI since cardbus
is not an option on 90% of what is sold. I would rather see an option
where you can purchase universal upgrade kits that don't limit me to
one vendor of a device. The only real rub is the antannea wires can't
fit though most hinge assembles. A universal rear hole would be preferred
near the mini-pci board, instead of doing precision drilling. Most of the
trouble I'm having with the router I'm building has to do with mounting
a seperate low profile cardbus adapter so it doesn't rattle and come
apart under vibration. Mini-PCI was designed for the sheer abuse
that you experience on the road. |
