PostPosted: Thu Apr 14, 2005 11:48 pm    Post subject: Compatibility issue? IBM T41 and PC 5220

Hey all, noob here. I just got a new IBM T41 and am having issues with my ev-do card (pc 5220). I can install the software fine, but when I plug the card in the laptop won't recognize it. The laptop starts installing usb drivers and such then tells me the usb device has not been installed properly.

Anyone been in a similar situation and know a fix?
Thanks in advance.

I found 2 threads that indicate others are having the same problem with IBM ThinkPad T41 and PC 5220 cards.

My laptop is Centrino based and works well with the Novatel V620. It also has the Texas Insturments bus controller which was reported to have a voltage problem in the links you provided Michael.

Is it possible for you to test the V620 or one of the other cards available? The 5220 is first gen and has had compatibility probs wiht other computers.

Michael, you should keep a page of computers and cards with known issues. It could save a lot of people some grief.

First off thanks for the links. I was pretty sure there would be other people out there experiencing the same problem. Unfortunately none of the links really addresses how to fix the issue.. just that the issue exists.

So assuming that it is a power issue I went into my bios and looked for things I could monkey with. I disabled some usb boot thing but that didn't work. Then I disabled the PCI Bus Power Management... and low and behold..

the laptop recognized the card! I tested it out and it seems to work fine.

Now, are there any negative issues with having the PCI Bus Power Management disabled?

Thanks!

Thanks for posting a followup and glad that it is working for you.

If you wouldn't mind, post the steps you did to disable PCI Bus Manager, it will probably help someone else with a T41 who finds this thread.

Simple. Just go into the bios setting when booting up. Go into power management and you can disable the PCI Bus Manager there.

Now, I don't know if this will have any negative side effects to your computer so people should do this at their own risk. But it does get the evdo card to work.

Newbie here,
I am having the same problem guys. I have read other threads but this seems to be the only solution someone has found. I'm not that computer literate so could someone tell me how to enter that bios setting when booting up and where to find the power management?
I would greatly appreciate it.
This looks like a great forum. I will be sticking around to add comments for sure.

According to this URL:

Sierra Wireless PC5220 / AC580 Compatibility Issues

The PC 5220 P7 and PC 5220 P8 have problems with the T41, however, the P8A revision does not have problems with the IBM ThinkPad T41. Check what version of the PC 5220 you are using.
