I'm in Brooklyn, NY and a field techincial. dont' want the hassle and unreliablility of looking for wifi spots as I move around many locations in a day.
I'm looking at a EVDO as a answer to high speed wireless on the go.
Can someone help me out here? This is what I pretty much want to do.
I have a Pocket PC (Ipaq 4155) with Bluetooth and my Dell 700M laptop have a BT card also. so I'm thinking of a phone that is EVDO enable and have Bluetooth so I can connect with my PPC and laptop.
I"m thinking of also getting one of those PocketPC Smarthphone with new voice/EVDO activication. that way I don't have to carry a separate phone & PPC.
I'm looking for a Windows Mobile smartphone with a built in keyboard and bluetooth (to allow my laptop to surf wirelessly too). There was a smartphone saw a few weeks ago, I forgot the model of the phone and don't even know if it support EVDO but,
- it slides to the side to expose a keyboard and the OS automatically goes to landscape mode.
- have no antenna sticking out.
Final question:
- I know verizon lowered the price of EVDO to $60 a month. what is the cost at the end after taxes and fees?
- What is your average speed?
THANKS ALOT IN ADVANCE! |

Right now the only phone that does this is the PPC-6700 sprint and Alltel are the only ones carrying them, verizon is going to carry the XV6700 which is the same. roomer has it that Bluetooth on the XV6700 might be crippled so you cant use it as a modem theirs no way to confirm this till it's released. Sometime early January.
I use the ppc6700 and I知 located in south Florida. Sprint coverage down here is better than Verizon.
The only drawback when you use the phone as a modem you can not use it on voice and data at the same time so if your downloading something and a call comes in the data connection will pause till you finish the call or ignore.
As for cost I知 not sure how much verizon is you might want to check their web site. Sprint however is your voice plan + $25 data plan (recommended if you use the phone as a modem). Which entitles you to 40mb and .02 for each Kb after and caps at $70. This is actually more expensive than if you get a PCcard which only costs $60 for unlimited access .
Speed depends on how many users are at that given moment on the tower you池e on. On the average you値l get 400-700Kbps sometime a lot less especially crowded city areas. |

Actually it may be less to do $25/$70/month if you are not always a heavy users. If not using heavily some months, it may only be a $25-$50 charge. When you get a card, you always pay $60/month even if not using much for some months. Downside using phone as modem is that you can't talk at same time with current phones.
Keep in mind that the extra charges are only if tethering to laptop. When doing data activity ON the phone (not tethered), it is unlimited on the $15-$25 accounts with no extra charges. The extra only is for tethering, which caps to $70/month.
I typically get over 1MB/sec on Sprint. For speed averages, see this thread...
