| I have seen all the issues with the Verizon TOS and was wondering if there was any restriction placed on the Alltel EVDO unlimited service. I currently use Alltel for all my cell phone service and since they supply EVDO in my area, am looking at them for this service. |

I could be wrong but I could not find anything in either the brochure or the website on Alltel Access Broadband that said unlimited access was limited.
When I tried the Edge, with Cingular, it explicitly stated in the fine print that Edge access wasn't meant to be a primary ISP.
I couldn't find anything like that with Alltel. I previously had Sprint service before they had EVDO in this area and with the unlimited package, I downloaded mp3s, avi and movs, and viewed thousands of photos at dpreview.com. Never had any problem. When I checked in Verizon and Cingular, I saw pretty quick that their service was limited despite being billed as "unlimited" whereas with Sprint (pre-EVDO) and Alltel, I haven't noted this to be listed anywhere.
Like I said, I could be wrong but I haven't seen any listings with Alltel in their terms of service--and I read the TOS several times in the 45 minutes I waited in line the other day to replace a card.
With my cellular service with Alltel, I've never had a glitch and never had a dispute that wasn't settled quickly. It took 6 months for Sprint to stop billing me for a service I no longer had and Cingular charged me over $60 despite the saleswoman telling me it would not cost me a dime if the service didn't work out for me.
Good luck,

| I can't find any data-specific TOS for EVDO or 1X, no matter the rate plan or the device type. |

I remember seeing in one of our early brochures but the current axcess moblie data solutions does not mention anything about it not being used as a primary ISP. I read through the fine print on the back of the pamphlet also and it only made mention of cost per kilobytes being rounded and roaming costs.. Nothing about exclusive ISP. _________________ I work for Alltel in FL. |

I have a friend who manages a local Alltel Store. I have had Alltel cell for a long time, before she became the mgr (so that has nothing to do with it).
When I recently (two months) signed up for EVDO service she called her big boss and inquired about the service limits because I had been reading about some of the problems members have been having with Verizon. She was informed that there was no limit, that unlimited means exactly that.
Just for kicks I left my laptop on and connected via the Kyocera card for many days and there was no problems and no charges when my first bill, post EVDO svc. came.
So, having had excellent service from Alltel for a long time and after the aforementioned assurances and test, I would pretty much conclude that with Alltel, Unlimited means unlimited.

I've been using the alltel 1x service as my primary internet provider for the last 6 months or so and aside from the occasional roaming charges (which are immediately credited when I call) I've had 3 gigs downloaded eachmonth and never been billed for overage. _________________ I work for Alltel in FL. |

| In reference to my previous post: in case anyone reading it thinks I am a dummy (I probaby am), I do realize that the connection times out, so I had my email client set to check mail ever 5 minutes. It seemed to keep the connection open. |

Just an update on Alltel EVDO service.
I have now had the Kyocera KR1 with an Alltel Kyocera card, turned on 24/7, for almost 7 months am it has been on line and working all that time. I use it for two laptops (mine and my wife's) and am getting ready to put it in the motorhome, using a "ground plane" roff mounted antenna. I have, to this point, only been using it in the RV as a plug in card for one PC.
At this moment I am connected to the wireless router from about 80 feet while sitting in the motorhome. The router is inside the house. I am still getting around 600K service. My cell phone, Alltel Motorola V710, is getting 2 bars, so that means to me that the Kyocera router and card are giving that speed with a so-so signal.
At this period in time, I think that is outstanding technology.
I am a recently retired computer tech and consultant and have been so for 30 some years. I can well remember 300 baud wired modems. Yes, I said 300 baud. You could sit and watch each letter being printed on the screen. And that was strictly black and white (or green on black) text.
So, to me, the fact that I am sitting here, using a featherweight 12" Averatec laptop (which I highly recommend for a great laptop and a great company to deal with) and doing email and surfing the internet at very comfortable speeds, is almost unimaginable. Even though I am very knowledgeable in things computerish. It is awesome.
And I highly recommend the Kyocera KR1 receiver/router and Kyocera PC 650 (and Alltel) as well as Booster Antenna.com. All are excellent in service and definitely deliver what they advertise.
Just on the off chance that anyone may be interested, we are going on a 5 or more year motorhome adventure all over the country very soon, so I will send in notes to let others know how well the equipment works as I travel.
Thanks,

If Alltel doesn't have any limitations, including allowing 100% usage that might be roaming data (this would be key), Alltel would sure seem to be the way to go at least for data laptop cards as they would have the greatest data coverage of all carriers.
- Sprint 1xRTT and EVDO roaming
- Verizon 1xRTT roaming (EVDO coming this year?)
- Their own 1xRTT/EVDO network
I wonder if you can get Alltel if your home area does not have a native Alltel network? |

| sure you can get alltel where alltel isnt native (like los angeles) but youll be driving quite a ways until you find an alltel store and where you get the phone, the number goes with it so you cant get a local number to los angeles if you get it in say pheonix, you would have a pheonix number |

Ok, let's say that I'm an AllTel customer using my KPC650 Passport card roaming on Verizon's EVDO network (EVDO roaming up and running). I'm streaming audio, video, my neighbor's Slingbox feed, and downloading the latest BSD ISO. I'm house sitting for three months, whatever. Oh... and I'm in a densely populated Verizon market.
Am I going to get the boot? Or is Verizon going to just suck it up and do NOTHING?
Same question for my buddy over here with his Sprint S620 roaming on Verizon EVDO.
Never mind your carrier's ToS. What about carrier-to-carrier data agreements? Who's ToS takes precedence? Is Sprint going to whip out their Verizon-approved Service-Interruptis Love Clubâ„¢ and bonk a few users?
Heck, what about using a Verizon EVDO card on AllTel or Sprint? Would VZW drop me for using TONS of data over another network? (don't answer that. lol) |

What about a multi carrier ban? You could never own a data card in this country again! Well EVDO/CDMA. That would be scary, but I dont things will get that extreme unless you really piss them off. _________________

While doing some investigating into the few folks who were warned they were being disconnectd by Verizon, I discovered that Verizon (I am retired from Verizon and still have a number of contacts within the company, BTW) was only targeting some folks, who may not be the ones who posted on here, that they were using their connections to serve several homes in the local area by rebroadcasting the signal over some pretty heavy Wi-Fi. Thus, they had broken their agreement which forbids such activity.
After talking with Alltel, which now has an agreement in place with Sprint for EVDO, etc. roaming, if you are an Alltel customer then their service agreement takes precedence over the roam provider.
I am leaving on the 1st of Aug for an extended jaunt around the U.S. so will be able to verify the service coverage and how well the roaming agreement stands up. Will let th forum know what I discover.
Regards,
