| I spoke to an Alltel rep and they said that you can do anything you would normally do with DSL. I specifically asked her if I could play online games like Battlefield 2 and download large files, and that is what her reply was. |

| I have the Alltel unlimited plan myself, the KPC650 in my laptop, and my "local" area is the Florida panhandle (Crestview, specifically). I go from my local area to the Atlanta area on a regular basis, and while the "Roaming" button is on, Im never charged roaming charges unless I use QNC. |

The EVDO cards are modems. Leaving a modem on does not affect the network in any way. When the network receives a signal from your modem then you get airtime back and forth. After the work is done the EVDO network then ignores you until it gets another signal from you.
If, instead of being on a mute, your method employed a constant flow of data, say a file download, movie, etc. then you would be using air time.
Of course there may be some incidental ping or notification but no real traffic with just leaving it on. |

|

I thought I might share my roaming experience. I am a Phoenix Alltel customer. I use the Kyocera KCP650. When I travel to Los Angeles (once a month) - and some parts of San Bernardino, I am ALWAYS capped at about 22kbps download speed. Except between midnight and 5 a.m., where I get the full approx 512 kbps. This occurs when I am in EVDO areas, and the indicator says DO.
Does anyone else experience "speed capping" when roaming in the LA area? |
