I use the 700m for a GPS in the car as I have my older, heavier, bigger computers and mounting the laptop can cost up to 300 bucks for a police type floor mount. The cop mounts are ugly and permanent so I never installed one, I just balanced it on the ashtray and the armrest and hoped for the best. I did a nine day trip through MD, PA, WV, VA and DC hanging on to my old HP N3310 (7.5lbs) for dear life but the GPS was crucial.

As you can see in the pic, my ashtray is substantial and sticks out about 5 inches which is perfect for the 700m. Look to the front of the tray just at the edge, you can see the strip of velcro.

The computer is very stable as it is but I could put two more strips of velcro and make it withstand a several G impact. Very Happy

The other side of the velcro is attached to the 700 at just the right place to allow a bit of display adjustment to take care of the glare.

You can see the V620 PC wireless card to the front left of the computer, moving broadband babeee!

Some shots of the GPS hooked up.

That is just classic! What car is it, can't do that with the Focus so I'm eventually getting the quick mount no-drilling police mounts that have two elbows on it.

I agree that a GPS is a must need, I put 100k on my car in the past three years (50K last year alone) and my MS Streets and Trips with GPS for $99 was the best money I ever spent... nothing like getting off of a major highway that was closed for an accident and taking the back roads.

also, what GPS system are you using? I'm looking for one that works with the data from traffic.com to reroute around traffic (Atlanta sucks in the morning).

BTW, the Dell looks great... nice screen.

It's the big brother to your Focus, a '99 Lincoln Town Car. If I drove the kind of miles you do, that Focus would sound pretty good but at an average of just 711 miles per month I can still put gas in that V8.

The GPS is a DeLorme Earthmate with Street Atlas 2004 S/W I got on eBay for 85 bucks. It's WAAS capable but still first gen. It's very accurate and got me around the wilds of the Cumberland Gap and the back roads of New England just fine.

I use a 300 watt inverter from Radio Shack to power all the toys, that puppy could run half of Dallas if it had more than just the two plugs. Very Happy

Watch out.

There is that one site that over charges for everything EVDO. Just watch. I'll bet your 50 cent mount will be sold for $49.99 Laughing

BTW, great post. I love simple/inexpensive solutions for high tech problems.
