| Quote: | | For as little as $25 a month, consumers now have access to speeds comparable to those at a Wi-Fi hotspot wherever they travel, without having to stay tethered to a local coffee shop. (The technology that allows this, EVDO, was developed by Qualcomm (Research), which stands to profit no matter which carrier is more successful in selling the service.). |
I'm a little suspect of anything what this author writes ... "$25 a month" which I think he is refering to is the EV-DO service available for cell phones ... people with cell phone are not scattering in search of a WI-FI hot spots
Well at least no to connect them up to broadband service. |

| $25 a month is likely the Sprint phone as a modem plan. I don't see anything unorthodox about using your phone to connect your laptop to the net. Assuming you are not using Bluetooth it would definitely be comparable to a connection card. |

Interesting, you have a link to a Sprint site that has more information on the "phone as a modem plan" ? |

^It's $25/month for 40MB and then some KByte charge after that, which caps to $70/month. Essentially $70/month unlimited when tethering. BTW, you get unlimited data use ON the phone with the $25/month.
If a light user some months, this turns out to be better than getting a laptop card at $60-$80/month as you'll get charged that even for light use. Downside with tethering is that you can't talk on phone at the same time, at least with current models. Maybe next year. |

BTW, ALL of Sprint's PowerVision phones do EVDO with official support of USB tethering. Some are BlueTooth and can act as modem too. Sprint also has essentially caught up with Verizon on EVDO covereage and apparently has quite a bit more capacity. Verizon's new BlackBerry phone allows USB tethering but I suspect Verizon will only support on BB because only businesses buy it and businesses tend to support their own phones.
Click here for PowerVision phones. The 6700 PocketPC phone also does official USB/Bluetooth phone-as-modem tethering. |
