Hello,

Does anyone have a recommendation for a ultra portable Windows laptop with a PC Slot? I already have a very modern PowerBook, my Compaq laptop is a bit clunky and old. Of course, looking primarily to be using EVDO cards in them.

What is everyone else using?

Thanks!

Well, of course a small laptop means a big price, but.... The Sony VAIO T250P/L Notebook is very nice, I don't personally like the graphic chipset or the fact that the video memory is shared; but that is what you'll get on smaller units.

Here's a post I made earlier when I purchased my Dell 700m. I've had it about three weeks and really enjoy it. I was motivated to get one specifically to take advantage of EVDO.

I've been carrying the thing everywhere! I was bidding on an eBay auction while eating a burger at a drive in a couple of days ago.

My car has an large ashtray with cup holders that juts out about five inches. I put a four inch strip of velcro just inside and adjusted the 700m on it and now have a functional computer mount for 50 cents. The 700m weighs under five pounds and is quite stable on under normal driving conditions.

I also use it for a GPS in the car so it has been an excellent purchase.

The Dell is very nice, but not a sublaptop... but should be much cheaper than the Sony or any sublaptop can be. The Sony is actually smaller than one of those 3 subject notebook binders we used in school.

Basic differences that I see is the Sony in only 3 pouds, has 9 hours of bettery life w/o dvd use(5 to 6 watching DVDs; 3.5 burning DVDs), its a bit slower than the Dell and a smaller screen... both giving you the longer battery life.

What this shows you is there are MANY choices out there, only question is how small do you want to go and how much you want to spend? I was looking at the Sony for an in-car entertainement sysem and GPS device - along with Internet access while on the road. Basically it was small enough to fit in the glove box while not in use. I couldn't come up with a way to have the video upside down so I could mount it to the roof of the car over the rear view mirror so I dropped the project until I could work that out. I'm now looking at the mini Apple (fits just under the radio and is self cooling) and looking for a small LCD screen.

I had to rule out Dell myself since they can not legally sell their extended warranty plan in my state; they are required to have an insurance company back up the plan and they are the only major manaufacturer who does not. I would have to drive over state line and get a mailbox just to buy it. I actually had it all ready to order but they refused to sell the warranty and stated I couldn't even make a claim unless in a state they could sell it in. Its too bad because I think they make an incredible machine for the price.
