Hi All
I'm using the UM175 with a Gateway desktop that has 2 USB ports on the front. My signal strength is -75 to -85 db. The problem is that after a while the evdo drops out for no apparent reason. The RSSI still remains -75 to -85 db. I can switch the modem to the other USB port and all goes well for a week or so and then the process repeats. I was able to move the computer downstairs and reaquire the evdo signal but the problem remains of having to switch USB ports every so often or relocating the computer. Anyone else ever have this problem or know how to fix it? Would a wireless router help? With a router at least I could keep the desktop in one location and only have to move the router around the house to keep chasing the evdo signal. Is this right? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
Mark

Mark,

A router can certainly help you stay connected 24/7. If for some reason the connection goes out on the router it will automatically reconnect the UM175. This would save you from removing the card and placing it in another USB slot.

This link will take you to a list of compatible routers with your UM175 - http://3gstore.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=137_176

It does sound like your getting a pretty good signal (-75 to -85). However, you may want to do a site survey to confirm that it's not a signal issue.

To determine if an antenna will help you, we need you to do some homework. By doing some simple testing, you'll be able to determine what kind of equipment you need BEFORE buying!

First, mark down your RSSI in the location where you usually use your aircard. Then do a speed test at http://speedtest.net and write down the results.

Next, walk around outside your house and mark down the best RSSI that you can find in the area immediately surrounding your house (remember, closer to zero is better for RSSI). At that location with the best RSSI, do another speedtest and write down the results.

Lastly, knowing that you may need to install an external antenna outside the house on the side of the house where you found best RSSI value, determine how much cable you'll need to get from the antenna to the location where you use your aircard.

Post your results to your site survey here (or call us at 866-3GSTORE) and we'll help you determine if an antenna will help you.

Thanks for your reply. I'm using a desktop so I don't think going around outside of the house is practical. I did however, take the booster antenna I got got from verizon out on the roof on the east side of my house. It made absolutely no difference. Still no EVDO signal but a -80dbm on the 1X. Downstairs on the west side of my house I have -75 EVDO and 1X and get download speeds in excess of 2 mb per second. I'm totally happy with that! Its just that I'm still having this dropped EVDO signal every couple of days and sometimes I have to plug and unplug the um175 10 times or more to reaquire the evdo signal. All the while this is going on the 1X is-75dbm. I just got the mbr1000 from 3GStore today but havn't had time to set it up yet so we'll see if that helps. I'm still curious if anyone has any idea why I can have a -75dbm EVDO signal one minute and no service the next? Is it the cell tower having problems or could there be something on my end? Thanks.

Mark, I had the same issue for quite some time and I can commiserate with you, it's frustrating. I really doubt the router is going to change your signal strength or reception. I have the same router and it didn't help me a bit in that respect. (not that I expected it to)

I am about 9 miles, nearly line of sight, from my tower. I went with 15db 900MHz grid antenna to boost the signal. That seemed to work for a bit and then the EVDO would still drop off. It would go from a -80 something RSSI to nothing and then back again. Eventually I found another tower that was about the same distance away, but has far less traffic on it. It has seemed to do the trick. solid conection now

I'm no cellular genius here, but if you have multiple towers available to you it may be worth getting a directional antenna so you can single out a good one.

Wild Bill
Thanks for the reply and the good advice. I'm just glad to hear someone else has experienced this problem and I'm not going nuts hear. Also good to hear you resolved the issue with the directional antenna. That will be my next move if the router doesn't work out. But...so far, the router seems to be helping for the past 2 days. The first day I had really good DL speeds of 2.5 Mbps but the UL speed was so slow it wouldn't even register. Surfing was very erratic with alot of "page cannot be displayed" messages. Today the UL is .3 to .5 Mbps with the same DL of 2.5 Mbps. I'm pretty happy with this and just hope the dropped EVDO signal problem doesn't rear its ugly head again. We'll see...
Thanks alot.
