I live in the trees about a mile from a tower and usually have low bars but acceptable reception if I stay need the windows on my cell phone
I was using a UM-175 without the stubby antenna and usually got acceptable reception.
The UM-175 was also used in a van./camper in the summer usually at non-urban locations -( like the Upper Peninsula and North of Duluth but also out in the wilds of Colorado and New Mexico.
My experience with the UM-175 was that with the stubby, it would do a pretty good job but not bulletproof. Several times we had marginal reception but could not maintain the signal. A few times there was nothing - like in the SW Va mountains.
We got the MiFi2200 so we could connect more than one computer and I bought it with the proviso that it would go back if it could not maintain a home connection. I also kept the UM-175 which I can swap out if I go to the Verizon support path and change the device.
So.. speedtest:

download = 2.72, upload = .57
4-5 bars on the 192.168.1.1 admin tool
on the diagnostic modem :
Signal -EVDO = -87dbm
Signal -1x = 100dbm
the MiFI is sitting in a window on the opposite side of the nearest tower. There is a tower on the side the MiFI is on but it appears to be about 4 miles away.
I cannot tell which tower it is connecting to.
however - it appears that we have an acceptable home connection but I'd like to have a booster/repeater for our travels - that could also be used in our home - a dual purpose capability but the primary goal is to help the MiFi get the towers when we are out and about in the boondocks.
Thanks for any opinions, advise, help and I apologize for breaking protocol by poaching on someone's else's thread. |

There was no need to apologize.
I would suggest that since you are getting an acceptable home connection, you simply take the current setup on a road trip, and see how it does.
More homework.  |

I'll probably do that.. and then try to be aware of where to find retail locations for the equipment.
thanks |
