PHS300 vs MiFi Cost/Benefit analysis

I have an iPod Touch and want to be able to use it anywhere. There are no hotspots where I work. I have a Motorola Q (original, with a Q9C in reserve if I need it) with a (Employee Discount) unlimited data plan.

I called Sprint about their MiFi and they want to charge me $50/month for it. I can get the Cradepoint PHS300 for ~$100 and (I think) no monthly fees.

So what's the big decision? Why would anyone pay a monthly fee? What am I missing here?

I am trying to research this and reading a bunch of good links (but apparently I can't post them because I'm new...?)

but I need to make a decision on whether or not to buy the PHS300 by the end of today or tomorrow.
