the signal is processed by the time it leaves the 760, no????

A regular router doesn't "know" what to do with a USB760 when you plug it in. Whereas, a 3G router has support for a USB760, it has the "same" functionality that VZAccess Manager does when you run on your computer, except, it is built-in to the router.

Hope this makes sense.

Check out Beginner's Corner #1 Sharing Your Mobile Broadband Connection with a 3G/4G Router. There is a video that explains how a mobile broadband router works.

Yes ,I see... by the way just got connected on my EEE pc for the first time... It does work
with the usb modeswitch application (Ubuntu Linux) but you do have to re insert the 760 several times to get it recognised.... the Windows app was better that way but Windows overall is horrid. Linux forever.
was gettin worried there but all is well. Now I dont need a router Yee Haw!!!
