A few weeks ago, Novatel Wireless successfully completed over the air testing of its new MiFi Intelligent Mobile Hotspot prototype based on 4G-WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access). Novatel's WiMAX implementation immediately achieved throughput of 18Mbps in over-the-air testing and can support theoretical peak throughput speeds exceeding 30Mbps downlink and 10Mbps uplink in a 10 MHz channel. The current MiFi is based on 3G technologies.

Novatel Wireless has selected to use Beceem's high performance 4G-WiMAX chips. This makes sense, since both CLEAR and Sprint use the same chips.

We expect to have a lot more info on this product after the CTIA 2010 show in Las Vegas.

Questions:

(1) Is this 4G only or 3G/4G like the Overdrive?

(2) Your graphic looks like an edited version of the current MiFi picture. Do we know if the real product has the same form factor? Does it include signal notification LED? Battery indicator LED?

(3) Have they improved the battery life?

Any additional info?

Since it is using Beceem's 4G chipset, I would assume that it is 3G/4G as Beceem is providing 3G/4G radios all on one chip.

We haven't seen any actual photos of the device, so we're not sure if it will have the same form factor or not, that being said...we don't have any details regarding battery life either. Stay Tuned! Cool

I expect to have some pics next week at the CTIA show in Las Vegas.

I will get some comparisons between 3G only WiFi, Overdrive, etc.

It was a photoshop picture - NOT real. Look for a real pic (hopefully) next week.

I don't believe Beceem has a 3G/4G chipset. The Overdrive uses the Beceem 4G chipset and a standard Qualcomm modem. If the MiFi has 3G it will also most likely use Qualcomm as Novatel has used them for years.

You may be confusing the Beceem 4G LTE/WiMAX chip they have announced. That's not shipping this year.

Regards,
Steve

Here's another piece from wired on the 4G MiFi showing a different look it could be just the difference between the Sprint and the Verizon unit, I have only seen the one on the left...

I sure hope Novatel is keeping a keen eye on the issues of the OD..

The one on the right is the GSM version that the rest of the world uses. It's been out for almost as long as the Sprint/Verizon models, but it has a few extra features, I believe.

Has anyone heard anything about this MiFi recently? Seems to have vaporized.
