If anyone is doing development for the PC5220 or the AC580 cards, here are some notes to take into consideration:
Quote:
Clarification regarding AirCard 580 and PC 5220 SDK Support - April 4th, 2005

AirCard 580 units using firmware versions 0.74 and greater (as of today this includes Sprint and Telecom New Zealand) will be able to use the EVDO SDK functionality. Approvals with other carriers are proceeding, and software/firmware upgrades will be posted in the Support and Download section of www.sierrawireless.com for each carrier when they are available. Note it is not possible to use an upgrade for one carrier to upgrade an AirCard 580 or PC 5220 configured for another carrier.

Verizon PC 5220 units using firmware versions 2.35 and greater will also be able to use the EVDO SDK pending Verizon approval of the latest software and firmware.

If you are using the Watcher application:

To check the current firmware version of your Aircard 580, start the Watcher application and select Help-> About Watcher.
The firmware version should be listed as "p12074a0" Note "074" refers to firmware version 0.74

If you are using the VZAccess application:

To check the current firmware version of your PC 5220, start the VZAccess application and select Options-> Test WWAN device... The firmware version is listed beside "Version" in the Test Result dialog box. At the time of this writing, the latest Verizon approved version is 2.03, which does not support the use of the SDK. When firmware version 2.35 is approved by Verizon, the PC 5220 units can be upgraded to support the use of the SDK.

If you are using the Modem Connection Manager application:

To check the current firmware version of your PC 5220 or Aircard 580, start the Verizon Modem Connection Manager and select

Help->About Tab. The current firmware version is listed as "Modem SW Ver." At the time of this writing, the latest Verizon approved version is 2.03, which does not support the use of the SDK. When firmware version 2.35 is approved by Verizon, the PC 5220 units can be upgraded to support the use of the SDK

One other note about using the End User Firmware Updater (EUFU.exe) utility to update firmware, Phil states:
Quote:
There are no end user applications that allow forced updates.
So once you update, you're stuck at that version for all practical purposes, forever.

What functionality does the SDK provide?

In other words, what type of things can be done, that cannot be done now??

The EVDO SDK (Software Development Kit) allows you to create custom applications that talk directly to the wireless card. So if you're a programmer/developer, you can write your own Watcher, Connection Manager, VZAccess application (or combination thereof) to function exactly how you want. You can put together features and assemble a program with the "look-n-feel" that you're comfortable with. And because you are talking to the card via a low-level API (Application Programming Interface), you will have access to some functions that wouldn't normally be available in the canned software packages--like locking the card in EVDO mode, or showing the temperature inside the card.

Another good example would be to build an application/driver that makes the 5220 behave as though it were an Ethernet device (more like a WiFi card). Plug in the card and you have Internet--no connecting or messing around.
