How can test this card to find out what is going on? Also, does anyone think the software could be written wrong? This software I loaded the merlin firmware 1.12 is written for Verizon.... could that be a problem?

Anyone?

There is no difference between the Novatel V620 and Novatel S620 (V = Verizon, S= Sprint, just a Novatel 620 card with a different label on it). The card is reported identically to your laptop, so it doesn't matter if you have a V620 or S620. The software is the same for both.

If the card was not activated, it would not work at all on the Mac, so it has been activated.

That leaves 2 possibilities.

A problem with your S620 or a problem with your Mac.

It would be helpful to see if you could try the card on another Mac or Windows PC, to see if it works. If you did this, we would immediately be able to tell if the problem is with the card or computer.

I am going to contact Sprint to see if we can get your demo period extended, so that it buys us more time.

FYI, there are probably 1000+ PowerBook users using the drivers for Verizon & Sprint and it is working (you are not the first).

Send me a System Profile Report of your Mac and I will take a look and see if anything stands out.

About This Mac -> More Info -> File -> Save As -> just save default file

Email this file to mike @ evdoinfo.com

Another point, I know that you are interesting in uploading photos while on the road. The upload speed of EVDO is 4X - 12X slower than the download speed of EVDO. There is nothing you can do to make uploading faster, HOWEVER, it should be a lot faster than what you are getting now.

Ok Michael, I will send that but this laptop is set up for speed Hitachi 7200 rpm drive 2gb ram 6 months old...

I'm not expecting cable modem speed here, but that first day I got 2mb download for 20 minutes and since it's 450 down to zero in the same place and from 450 to zero when I try it around town. I know Sprint is just rolling out but to be on the bottom of the scale everywhere sucks..

A few more things,

- Call Sprint Customer Support and confirm that everything is setup with your account correctly

- Also ask customer support if the towers in your zip code / address is in an EVDO area Even if you are NOT, you should be getting faster upload & download speeds.

Since, it did work on day 1, I would expect that you are in an EVDO coverage area.

You might try re-installing the Merlin S620 software, running Disk Utilities and Fixing Permissions. Did you update or install anything else on your PowerBook right around when it stopped working?

Run System Profiler again, but make sure your Merlin S620 is inserted when you run the report. The report you sent over, doesn't show the S620.

Thanks!

mike @ evdoinfo.com Honestly, it's like you say on the site, Sprint doesn't know one thing about the Mac and EVDO or their wireless offering at all. I've spent 2 hours with them over this already.

I run the disk permissions, blow my cache, run the weekly cron scripts, I do it all (I have a digital tech business as well) I definitely have a smooth running set of computers even diagnosed a bad ram chip in the dual processor.

Maybe tomorrow I should drive around and try it out more. So far when I go somewhere I boot it up and go directly to the speed site and test it there. you'd think somewhere I'd get a fast test result at least once. That's basically all I do with thing is test the download upload and see what's up.

Is there anyway I can find a current map of LA coverage?

Here is the current map:

orange = current EVDO
tan = future EVDO
dark green = 1xRTT

Hi Mike thanks for trying to help me, so you think I need to contact Sprint again and ask the questions you mentioned before? Is there anything else with the card that I can check or do anything with?

I should be able to get at least one test in that shows a good speed shouldn't I? I have the antenna...
