|
|
This issue is resolved with the latest firmware, see: CradlePoint 1.6.9 Firmware
It appears the newly released BlackBerry 5.0 software has broken the functionality that allowed users to tether to any CradlePoint Router Models.
If you are looking to continue using a BlackBerry Storm as a modem with a CradlePoint Router, we advise not performing the update to 5.0 software until CradlePoint releases a firmware that corrects these known issues.
3GStore Support department recently received a call from a user that was using the Blackberry Storm with a CradlePoint MBR1000. Everything was working fine as of just 2 weeks ago when he had recently updated his Storm to the latest BlackBerry Software release 5.0
Just as soon as he performed his update he realized that his Cradlepoint MBR1000 router would no longer allow for his storm to connect and allow any of his computers to access the internet through the router.
Our customer was using the following:
-BlackBerry Storm
-CradlePoint MBR1000 (Any firmware release up to and including 1.6.2)
-Verizon Service
If you are currently using any model of CradlePoint router with a BlackBerry device we STRONGLY ADVISE AGAINST UPGRADING YOUR BLACKBERRY to the 5.0 Software.
If this new software has effected you in connecting to any of the CradlePoint Router family of products, please reply to this Thread with the following information:
CradlePoint Router Model:
Firmware on Router:
BlackBerry Model
BlackBerry Software Version
Service Provider:
If you are looking to purchase a CradlePoint router for use with a BlackBerry, be sure to check the software version is not 5.0 to assure compatibility with CradlePoint products. _________________ - Victor |

Cradle Point now has the disclaimer that their products currently do not support the newly released 5.0 BlackBerry Software Update!!!
This information can now be found under each "Supported" Devices Drop down on each CradlePoint Product page...
Disclaimer Reads....
Blackberry Devices running the 5.0 Version of Blackberry Operating System are known to have problems connecting to CradlePoint routers. It is recommended that users wanting to connect or “tether” to a CradlePoint router with their Blackberry device use the 4.x or earlier Blackberry Operating Systems.” _________________ - Victor |

The recent compatibility problems blackberry users experienced after they upgraded their phone's software (after updating their Blackberry to the latest version of firmware, they found that it was no longer compatible with their Cradlepoint router) prompted this very important tip: you do NOT need to install every software/firmware update to your device!

I have read your recent post regarding the OS 5.0 version and had recent problem using the MBR1000 with my BB Curve and OS 4.5.
The router seemed to work once in a while but would never stay connected for very long. I spoke with both Verizon and Cradlepoint; neither one could resolve the issue.
Cradlepoint in fact stated that there was a known issue with BB Curve phones and the MBR1000 router. They did not mention any particular OS version that would have caused the problems I was experiencing. I have since returned the router for a refund.
I do not have access to DSL or cable service. My question is, what 3G routers will work with my Alltel/Verizon BB Curve? Preferably, 3G N router.
Thank you. |

Lou,
The CradlePoint routers would have been your best bet for the blackberry to be supported. SOrry things did not work out like you expected to.
The Blackberry has been a hit or miss lately from what our support team has seen.
All depends on the carrier, model and software version.. _________________ - Victor |

because of all the problems people have been having, we have decided to remove all Blackberry's from our router compatibility charts.
some people are still able to use their blackberry's with cradlepoint routers successfully, and if you are one of those people we ask that you share information about your combo in the "Blackberry + Cradlepoint SUCCESS Stories" thread |

Alex and Victor,
Thank you for the quick response to my question.
Also, thank you for creating a new forum link in which users of Blackberry's and Cradlepoint routers can share their success using this combination.
I will continue to check with Blackberry and Verizon for fixes to this problem and hopefully be able to use a Cradlepoint router in the future.
Thanks again,
Lou |

Update
Below is information I received from a Cradlepoint Tech in response to an email I had sent on 12/28/09 regarding the Blackberry and Cradlepoint problem.

Subject: Cradlepoint and Blackberry Curve 8330
Tech Support,
I tried the MBR1000 router recently and ran into issues of it disconnecting after a short period and then not wanting to reconnect afterwards. I have seen some chatter on the internet about issues regarding Blackberry's with the OS 5.0; I am using the 4.5 OS on my Blackberry curve. I spoke with a Cradlepoint tech about the issue and he stated that Cradlepoint is aware of the issue.
I have spoken to web suppliers of your product and they are seeing that quite a few BB users are experiencing and reporting the same problem. When does Cradlepoint expect a resolution to the problem I and others are experiencing?
Up until this point, the Cradlepoint routers were the recommended choice to use and I'm sure that still holds true for most users, but I have not been able to experience it's full benefits. Please let me know when to expect a fix to the problem BB users are having.
Thank you in advance for your help. "

I just received emails today getting more information on the blackberry issue. Hopefully within the next month or 2 we will have a resolution for the all the new OS's that came out.
Let me know if there is anything else I can do for you.

New here, hope's it's alright to add to this thread..
I purchased an MBR 900 model with hopes of using it with the wife's Sprint 8330, software version 4.5.0.175 and am having the same problems described above.
It will initially be able to be used to surf, but after a minute or two just drop, with no reconnect.
It works fine with the MiFi 2200, but unfortunately that's mine under the 5G cap deal and the wife would probably burn through that in a couple of weeks
Her plan on the 8330 is unlimited data so I will patiently await for cradlepont's fix on this issue.
Great forum, I have learned quite a bit already and plan on learning much much more. |

Is this some kind of config change or a firmware update? Can you post the fix here. I'm looking for a router to use with my Storm with 5.0 on it and would be interested in a Cradlepoint. Are there any other routers that would work with Blackberry 5.0?
Thanks |

Does everyone agree that this latest release has resolved this issue? It doesn't seem to have resolved it for me. Anyone else still have issues? I'm still only able to connect very intermittently and not very often..
Pertinent facts:
Cradlepoint CTR350 router with firmware version 2.5.2 which is the latest publicly available one.
The Blackberry is a Bold 9000 on AT&T running BB OS v5.0.0.509. Everything else with the Blackberry seems to be working great..
When I tether my Bold to the router and it usually issues a PAP authentication request which never seems to get acknowledged, based on what I'm seeing in the router config. I usually only have success with the wap.cingular APN with appropriate username and password. Sometime I connect with the longer connect string, sometimes with nothing but the number to dial..
Any suggestions? Anyone else still having problems with Blackberries running the 5.0 OS?
Thanks! |

An update: After speaking again with the folks at CradlePoint support, we seem to have stumbled upon a solution to my connection problems that has resolved my issue, so far. I've disconnected and reconnected at least 5 or 6 times now with no problems, with power downs of the router in between, so I'm hopeful and thought I'd share this here in case it might benefit anyone else.
I am running the 2.5.2 firmware on the CTR350 router and connecting it to a Blackberry Bold 9000 on the AT&T network. I also have the latest leaked Blackberry OS for my device installed. (v5.0.0.509)
I do NOT have the tethering option enabled on my account and that means I need to use the wap.cingular APN settings instead of the isp.cingular settings. If I try to use the isp.cingular settings, my modem immediately gets thrown into "Suspended" status in the router status screen. The tech support guys at Cradlepoint will tell you the router won't work without a tethering option on your account. I know they are incorrect because I'm posting on my account at this moment and I don't have tethering on my account.
Here is my AT command script from the Modem -> Settings page
| Code: | AT
AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","wap.cingular"
ATDT*99***1# |
APN Name: wap.cingular
Pretty standard stuff..
So what made the difference for me? Amazingly, it was removing the name and password on the Basic -> WAN screen. I had originally had the standard APN name and password (wap@cingulargprs.com/cingular1) in there, but could very rarely connect with it configured like that. One of the Cradlepoint tech support guys suggested I try it without the name and password instead, and the router has connected every time I hook my Bold up now within probably 15 seconds or so.
In the past I used to get a "PAP Authentication Request Timed Out" error in my router log all the time and could very rarely connect. Now it seems to be connecting quickly every time. *fingers crossed*
I'm hopeful that this info will be useful to someone else in the future.
Thanks!
UPDATE: For the record, it still seems to be working quite well. Here is the speed I'm getting. Overall, I'm quite happy with the way this is working now!
