I have Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit and just bought an Alltel Huawei EC168, but Windows 7 will not recognize it as a modem. I called Tech Support and they said that this card does not work with windows 7 and that its only 10% of the time that it does work for people running windows 7. Well my friend has a HP with Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit edition and it works fine on his. So technically it should work on mine since the only diffrence is I have a Dell and 32bit os. Is there anyway someone knows how to get this alltel card to work on Windows 7 32bit? I just need it to recognize my card as a modem.

Hello, Jared!

Yes, I have 32-bit Windows 7 Ultimate and have _exactly_ the same issue you originally described!

I'd like to see your solution - would you have an objection to posting your procedure for all to see? I'm sure that many have this same issue and would be very grateful to see the solution.

Thanks
George B.

All you have to do is go into your device manager after you connect your alltel card. Do you notice that when you connect it that Win7 only recognizes it as a cd drive and its mass storage driver? Uninstall your cards mass storage driver under the usb in the device manager and also uninstall the cards cd drive driver. Then dont refresh your device manager but just sit there and wait like 1 min or 30 seconds and it will automatically recognize ALL of your cards drivers including the modem. This works for me every single time. And keep checking software.alltel.com for a permanent fix that Advanced Technical Support said will be coming soon.

this modem wont work with win7 32 bit because they haven't created a driver for the modem yet, however it will work with win7 64 bit because they designed win7 64 bit to utilize older drivers so people who upgrade from 64 bit xp can still use those older programs on win7. So its not really that the modem works only for some win7 computers because it works fine for 64 bit they just haven't made a driver for 32 bit so goodluck trying to get it to work. The driver is supposedly in the process of being created and I have been waiting for a month now. So what I have found out about this modem on the windows 7 32 bit is if you do go into your (control panel) click on (hardware and sound) click on (device manager) click on (disk drives) right click on (HUAWEI SD Storage USB Device) click on unistall then click on (Universal Serial Bus controllers) and right click (USB Mass Storage Device) click on unistall. This will allow windows 7 to recognize it as a modem. Click on your (alltel acces) icon and configure your modem you will be prompted to put in your ten digit phone number alltel should have provided you with that information when you purchased the modem. Once you configure that the computer should recognize it every time but the (alltel access) program will try to start it and won't be able to so what I do is go to the icon on the bottum right of the screen to connect to networks and find (Alltel Wireless Internet) and connect that way. It allows me to use the card everytime.

I'd break this down for you better but I didn't do this on my own system and am typing this from memory.

1. Plug the card in, it should see the Huawei as a drive and let you install the software (make a note of where the software was installed). Get to the point in the install where is wants you to plug in the device and kill the install.
2. Go to the Device Manager on your PC. Remove the USB Mass Storage Device and under Drives remove the Huawei.
3. Keeping the Device Manger open, unplug and reinsert the Huawei EC168. A bunch of Data Devices should show up.
4. Right-click on the first Data device and Update Driver. Point your system to look at the Driver folder where you installed the software in step 1.
5. Double-click the Access Icon on your desktop and let it finish the install.

Reboot your computer
Done

It worked the first time just fine... Thanks for all the info! Then it just quit, when I tried to do it again, it won't recognize it as a modem. I get to the part where I delete the USB Mass Storage Device and the Huawei from the device manager and plug the unit back in, and it just reinstalls the two units, it does not give me the long list of all my cards like it did the first time... any ideas?

If it doesn't work the first time uninstall the usb mass storage device and the huawei sd storage usb device again then in the toolbar of your device manager click on the (scan for new hardware) button then it should read the modem if it doesn't work just keep repeating it eventually it will work I've done it a hundred times already. but give the device manager a second or to after you have unistalled those two devices.

If you're having trouble using the EC168 directly in your computer, remember that you can also use it with a Cradlepoint router - the router handles the connection for you, and you don't need any software or drivers on your computer. Your computer simply connects to the router either via WiFi or ethernet - super simple!
