SAN DIEGO and BEDMINSTER, N.J., Dec. 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM - News), a leading developer and innovator of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and other advanced wireless technologies, and Verizon Wireless, which operates the nation's most reliable wireless networks, today announced that QUALCOMM and its subsidiary MediaFLO(TM) USA Inc., are working together with Verizon Wireless to bring its customers real-time mobile video over the MediaFLO multicasting network in the United States. QUALCOMM and Verizon Wireless expect to launch mobile TV services over the MediaFLO network in approximately half of the markets already covered by Verizon Wireless' CDMA2000 1xEV-DO-based broadband network, enabling Verizon Wireless to offer real-time mobile TV services of unprecedented quality to its subscribers. Verizon Wireless will be the first U.S. wireless service provider to offer MediaFLO when the network is commercially available.
Following the initial launch, QUALCOMM and MediaFLO USA Inc. will continue to expand the MediaFLO network throughout other markets that cover the Verizon Wireless' V CAST and BroadbandAccess service areas. Verizon Wireless plans to offer mobile TV service to its subscribers through MediaFLO-enabled EV-DO handsets and use the MediaFLO network to deliver mobile TV services when the network begins commercial operation.
"MediaFLO USA's network will allow us to provide compelling real-time multimedia services to wireless customers, complementing our industry-leading wireless voice and data services -- including our successful V CAST broadband multimedia service," said John Stratton, vice president and chief marketing officer for Verizon Wireless. "As we aggressively expand our mobile multimedia offerings, MediaFLO will help us continue providing the most innovative multimedia services in the nation."
"Using the MediaFLO technology and network, Verizon Wireless will be able to offer its customers a real-time TV-like experience on their wireless phones unlike anything available on the market today," said Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, CEO, QUALCOMM. "With the MediaFLO network, we have developed a wireless multicasting solution that will offer high-value, high-quality branded content at an affordable cost to service providers."
MediaFLO USA Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of QUALCOMM Incorporated, offering interactive wireless multimedia services to consumers in cooperation with U.S. wireless operators. The nationwide network, based on QUALCOMM's FLO(TM) technology and using the MediaFLO Media Distribution System, will deliver multimedia content to mobile devices in the 700 MHz spectrum for which QUALCOMM holds licenses with a nationwide footprint. MediaFLO USA Inc. expects to begin commercial operation of the new network in 2006, creating market opportunities for the entire wireless value chain and delivering on the promise of wireless multimedia to subscribers. |
This is GREAT news. This means, that eventually Verizon will move VCAST off of EVDO (just guessing) and provide real-time TV via MediaFLO. This will free up EVDO bandwidth and this is good news for all Verizon EVDO users. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

There are many sites/forums reporting that Verizon will be offering this MediaFLO real-time TV over their EVDO network. That is not true, it is a completely different network. As stated above, this is great news, as it will get off the bandwidth hogging Vcast streaming users off EVDO, so that more bandwidth will be available for everyone. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

MediaFLO Technologies, will participate in the panel entitled "The Race
to Broadcast TV to Mobile Phones" on Tuesday, April 25, 12:00-1:00 p.m.,
Las Vegas Convention Center Room S219/220.
Engineered specifically for the mobile environment, FLO technology offers several advantages over other mobile multicast technologies, including higher-quality video and audio, faster channel switching time, superior mobile reception, optimized power consumption and greater capacity than other multicast technologies. Specific performance features of FLO technology in a 6 MHz channel include:
* Support for transmitting up to 20 streaming channels of QVGA-quality
(320x240 pixels) video at up to 30 frames per second, 10 stereo audio
channels (HE AAC+ parametric stereo) and up to 800 minutes of
distributed Clipcast(TM) content per day (short-format video clips)
* An average channel switching time of less than two seconds
In addition, FLO technology-based multimedia multicasting will complement wireless operators' CDMA2000®/EV-DO and WCDMA/HSDPA cellular network data and voice services, delivering content to the same cellular handsets used on these 3G networks.
The MediaFLO system is an end-to-end solution that enables multicasting of high-quality video, audio streams, Clipcast media and IP datacasting to mobile handsets. 'high quality audio and video'???
I think the copywriters have finally given away their credibility and become simplistic copycats rather than writers.
Anyway, Dick Tracy has been vindicated. The past is now!
What's next, HD iPod movies at 240 x 320. |

* Faster channel switching time. Channel change time is approximately
two seconds with FLO technology, and does not require buffering, splash
screens or progress bars.
* Low battery power consumption without compromising channel switching
time. The commercial goal for FLO technology is approximately 3.8
hours of view time on a standard 850 mAh battery.
* High mobility reception, for example, in 700 MHz, FLO-enabled receivers
can operate efficiently at vehicular speeds up to 200 km/hr with
graceful degradation of service at even higher speeds.
