I would like to be able to use two computers at the same time with my Verizon EVDO service, so I'm thinking a router is a good option. At least I think so. I'm not sure how routers work...I assume they provide a wireless broadband connection for multiple computers. Currently, I plug my EVDO "thing" into a cable that and it sits on the windowsill (for better speed). The cable is then connected to a usb port on my computer. With a router, how is the connection made? Does the "thing" get plugged into the router? How does my computer know it is connected to the internet? Will I have comparable speed as with my current set-up?

Thanks for any assistance to my fundemental router questions.

the evdo "thing" is a modem.

the modem would plug into a router, taking the one evdo connection and "sharing" it between multiple computers. you will notice a speed loss if both computers are watching videos online, downloading large files, or other bandwidth intensive tasks

Yes, if you want to share your connection with multiple computers, a router is what you're looking for. Rather than plugging your modem ("thing") into your computer, you'll plug it into the router. Multiple computers can then share the connection by connecting to the router either via WiFi or via ethernet cable from the router to the computer.
