If you sign up for new service with Verizon beginning November 15 or later, that early termination fee is about to start hurting much worse. According to Boy Genius Report, Verizon is preparing to double its ETF to a whopping $350 if you cancel your service before your contract is up. For users with a simple calling plan, that amount of money can be close to the fees for a year's worth of service.

Oh, there's a little bone thrown in there for you: For every month of your contract fulfilled, the company knocks $10 off the ETF. Great deal? Hardly: Cancel your 24-month contract in the 23rd month and you're still on the hook for a $120 termination fee. Ouch.

washingtonpost.com interviewed James Gerace, a spokesman for Verizon Wireless, and confirmed the ludicrousness:

More info...

This ETF change will only be affecting Advanced devices. E.g.: PDAs, BlackBerrys, and the ENVTouch/Samsung Rogue (they will be needing a data feature, more info below).

The old $175 will remain for all other devices.

LG EnV Touch Data Requirement Starts Sunday 11/8
On September 8, 2009 Verizon Wireless announced a new category of phones called "Enhanced Multimedia" with the Samsung Rogue as the first device.

Effective November 8, 2009, the LG EnV Touch will be included in that category and activation or upgrade will require a data feature of $9.99 or higher OR enrollment in a Nationwide Connect or Nationwide Premium Calling Plan.

So, it isn't on all devices, I am sure more info will come out in the coming days. Mobile Broadband Devices are unchanged.

Sprint Says No Change In Its ETF Policy

Yesterday, 1:36 PM by Eric M. Zeman

In response to Verizon's move to double early termination fees from $175 to $350 for advanced devices, Sprint said that it is keeping its ETF policy unchanged.

verizon filed a 13-page response Friday to an FCC inquiry about why VZW increased its ETFs on certain advanced handsets from $175 to $350

verizon contends that in order for a prorated ETF (early termination fee) to end at zero over the span of a 2-yr contract, the ETF has to start at a higher value.

In the last eight years or so, the FCC has been run by and administered by the spineless.

But if Verizon continues its public be damned policies, Verizon may become the first telco to discover its may not be wise to mess with the FCC that is now being run by a more activist set of administrators.

Do a google search on "class action lawsuit" and "cellular termination fees"
Laughing

People need to realize that if a carrier gives you $200 off a $400 phone in exchange for a contract, then you need to pay the full price for the phone if you cancel.

Now, all the other crap they pull, though, that's unacceptable. Like the extra fees on top of that. I also am not happy with the nerfing of the roaming algorithms to severely restrict extended network use.
