Directly from the VZW site:

"Get high speed Internet when and where you need it..." There is NO mention of "For your phone in your car in the middle of the city..."

Does this also mean I should only use THEIR netbooks with built in service when I'm "mobile" somewhere?

Come on...

And for the record, I live in the sticks with no DSL or cable possiblities. If it wasn't for Sprint Broadband and 3G's antenna and amp, I would be stuck with 24.4 dialup.

you are of course entitled to your opinion, but how do you justify on verizon's behalf, their demand that we not sell ANY antennas, when they continue to sell antennas and adapter cables on THEIR site??

here's an example for the USB760:

As are many of the ones sold by 3Gstore, which were deemed unacceptable by Verizon.

rjsurfer - I was so engrossed in trying to make things work, the trial period came and went before I realized it. I have to take ownership of being "stuck" with the phone, and have not yet bought any additional equipment.

everyone - It seems all of this discussion digresses from the original question: why is Verizon doing this? Though I'm NOT a big-wig executive, I've had the unpleasant experience of having to work for and with them. I've worked in big companies where the exec's literally could care less if they do a dis-service to some other company ... they ONLY care about the bean counters' bottom line for their company. I've also worked in small companies and experienced being "squished like a bug" from the big companies ... for this very reason ... the big company could care less that we happened to "be in the way".

Verizon could care less if there's people out there using this equipment. And could care less if 3GStore thrives or goes belly up. What they DO care about is their own future growth, willing to step on the backs of anyone in their path.

3GStore selling this equipment doesn't enhance the strategy of Verizon trying to puff themselves up to be the "all being master of time space and dimension" wireless provider they want to be. And so, they've determined 3GStore cannot have an affiliation. QED

mclass55,

Antennas and Amplifiers work in cars, buses, taxis, trucks, RVs and many other "mobile applications". So, the argument doesn't really hold.

We are not going to allow people to get this thread off focus, so if your interest is to hijack the thread - you will lose your posting abilities rather quickly.

There's no difference between a "mobile" antenna and an antenna that is 20' tall except that one is more easily moved around than the other and one pulls in a stronger signal because an antenna is an antenna is an antenna. Even the aircard itself comes with a built-in antenna. Antenna's do NOT place a negative impact on the network and only serve to improve signal and performance especially in areas where Verizon/Alltel/Sprint/AT&T lack coverage. Antennas and amplifiers bring them in a lot of customers that would otherwise not be paying $59.99/month for wireless dial-up.

Amps are a somewhat different story though and as someone stated earlier I guess there could be circumstances where an improperly setup amplifier could interfere with the network to an extent but that's not the case for antennas. And Alltel who I originally purchased my mobile broadband plan from actually sold the same amp as one of the ones from 3gstore themselves along with routers and other devices so I don't believe all this crap about reasoning behind why Verizon has a right to tell a wireless internet store what they can and cannot sell.

Verizon is only one of the cellular providers that 3Gstore offers and you don't see the others complaining about what 3Gstore does and does not sell in the line of antennas and amplifiers. Verizon's sole intentions here are to stop competition from cheaper and better products so that they can overcharge and market their their new Verizon Wireless Network Extender in place of them. Verizon could care less about quality of service and is all about profit. If they weren't they wouldn't have a 5GB monthly cap on a $59.99/month service with overage fees that would require you to take out a second mortgage if you went over much and they wouldn't be increasing their early termination fee from $175 to $350. I've also had Alltel for almost a year and had great service the majority of the time and since the Verizon merger my service has gone nowhere but down. For the last couple weeks I've had to open a service ticket twice already because my connection keeps going from my usual Rev-A 1250Kbps download average I had with Alltel to less than half that and double or triple the ping times. It makes doing the business that I do online a royal pain so I have zero empathy for Verizon.

This thread is not making me feel warm & fuzzy about Verizon EVDO. Unfortunately they have the closest cell tower to my house.

I would not even want EVDO if they would just extend their DSL one more mile, but being the profit mongers that they are, they will get more $$$ out of me with a service that I'm getting less & less fond of as I read more about the crap Verizon pulls on it's customers, and now a reseller.

WhiteDwarf, just to elaborate a bit further on our feelings about Verizon - while we are obviously quite disenchanted with their dealings with us as a reseller, as USERS of mobile broadband we still feel that their mobile broadband service is valuable and works very well for many people. If you'd like some help finding a solution for mobile broadband - whether it's Verizon or otherwise - give us a call or send an email to "sales (at) 3gstore.com" and we'll be happy to help you select the best service for YOUR situation.

Yes, I have been talking to Alex the last few days actually.

I'm just still on the fence about this EVDO thing. I have FIOS at work, and cable at the house I'm moving from, and unfortunately EVDO & Satellite are my only options for broadband at my new residence. Compared to what I'm used to, I really hate both options. Crying or Very sad

I have had cable for 10 years, and never had any connection problems except when lines got ripped down by an ice storm once. I just know 3G is going to be a nightmare with weak signal, slow speeds during peak hours, intermittent connection, etc. I just don't have a great feeling about having to go to 3G for broadband. I know it will frustrate me.

The overcharge policies that try to scam people out of money with. I don't like it, it's slimey.

And now I see this Verizon strong arm tactic, and it makes me want to stay away from them.

And to top it off they are doubling their early termination fees?

Does Verizon hate its customers or something?

I live in the hills above the Napa Valley in Northern California. This area is on the fringe of three wireless towers: Sprint, Verizon and AT&T. It's impossible to use any of these networks without an external antenna and three watt amplifier. Stability is improved by adding a wireless router. The alternative is dialup.

I purchased three EVDO cards, wireless routers, external antennas and three watt amplifiers from 3Gstore two or three years ago. All are still working flawlessly. Without the support of 3Gstore these sales would not have taken place.

The folks at 3Gstore are knowledgeable, helpful and friendly, and when the chips are down they are always in my corner. This is a sharp contrast to my experiences in the local Verizon franchise store.

A better focus for Verizon would be adding a cell tower here and there, or boosting the signal from their present locations. Verizon would be wise to recognize that in semi-rural areas like this, 3Gstore is the best asset they could wish for.

Something is not right here. I cannot believe that Verizon Wireless as a company would be that stupid. They sell these products, but they aren't letting you? Besides being wrong, this is completely illegal. With all the hot water that the carriers are in right now with the FCC, I would think that someone with half a brain at Verizon (once they get wind of this), will reverse this.

I purchase my data card from these guys when they were called booster-antenna.com (anyone remember that). My card wouldn't work in my home, so I purchased one of these antennas and poof, it now worked. I later purchased one of those amplifiers to help even more. If I had not purchased either, I would have canceled a long time ago.

I smell either a lawsuit or someone at Verizn figuring out they goofed and fixing this pronto.

I don't know why anyone is surprised when Verizon shows their greed. It's an on-going thing. As for 3G, they want the monthly fees, but they don't really want you to actually use the service. That costs them money. The 5 GB limit, and then charging fees far higher than the per MB cost of the first 5 GB is a clear message that they don't want customers to actually benefit from the service. They prefer to get the monthly fees, while providing as little as possible.

Verizon has rolled out multiple upgrades for DSL, and now FIOS, where they can make the most profit for the least investment. Now, that's business, and who can blame them. But at least in PA they negotiated a monopoly on some services in return for providing high speed services to the entire state. Problem is, while they continue to invest in densely populated areas, rural areas are getting nothing. While I consider Verizon greedy, which they are, I've got to blame the state government for agreeing to a poor deal.

Bottom line, when you deal with Verizon, watch your wallet, because they are NOT your friend.

Some may remember when NBC used explosives to cause a GM truck fuel tank to explode, when they could not get a normal collision to do the job. They were going to stand behind their story, until GM pulled their entire advertising budget from NBC. That caused NBC to straighten out their act. Perhaps a large scale boycott of a customer unfriendly 3G vendor might get some better results ????????

WOW, talk about a seriously stupid business move!

We live in an area where, in general, Verizon is great (signal wise), however there are pockets of inferior service. This is also true of the other largest competitor in our area, AT&T. We also live in a house with a metal roof and thermal windows. Without our antenna and repeater, we just would not have service.

In addition, my husband has a serious medical condition that requires us to be able to contact Dr.'s at all times. Again, without our antenna and repeater, we couldn't even leave home for any extended time. We would virtually be prisoners in our own house. With our equipment, we are able to travel, go camping, etc.

Our favorite camping/fishing spot has little VZW service (might get a signal on top of the hill, pointing west, with one foot in the air, and holding your breath while tring to connect). AT&T is somewhat better, but not at all what it should be since that is their "territory". With my antenna and repeater, my wireless card and phones work around our camper, enabling us to camp! YAY. We also have numerous AT&T users coming to visit since their signal is much better there.

VZW should be PROMOTING these devices, not discouraging them. The last few years would have been horrendous for us without this additional equipment. I am VERY disappointed in such small, mean, thinking amongst a company that tries so hard to project a progressive attitude.

Stick to your guns 3G. Your company and this forum gave me the information to enable us to be mobile and lead a "normal" life. Shame on VZW.

WOW - this is unbelievable. I use my Verizon USB760 for work as I travel several times a month, and without the booster antenna and direct-connect amp I got from 3Gstore, I would not be able to use my mobile broadband service (which I pay $60/month for!) in a lot of places. There are some spots I travel to where the signal is so weak I can barely connect, but with the booster/amp connected to my aircard I'm able to get a great signal and can do my work.

Once my 2-year contract is complete, I will have paid Verizon around $1440 for their service. If I hadn't bought the booster and amp, I'd have canceled my service during my 30-day trial period, and would have paid them about $20. Seems like Verizon should be ENCOURAGING places like 3Gstore to sell this stuff, not BANNING it!
