Well, I did a test to the recommended server in NYC, not sure why but my ping is much better than when I use the server that is closer.

using the CTR in a upstairs or in the attic, can you run an ethernet cable down to the basement and run a switch off that?
if you prefer wireless a dd-wrt'd router as a client bridge wold do the trick, or possibly this mystery wifi device 3gstore is launching. _________________ PortoBatMBR1000 |

I can put it in the attic, but it's just a crawlspace. It depends on if I ever need to mess with the modem/router after I set it up.
I'd rather put an antenna on the roof and a cable down to the basement. It's only a single story house.
A 25ft cable would get me from the roof to basement. |

Ok, this is pissing me off.
I tried both mIRC & Chatzilla and I cannot connect to ANY servers. Whether I use the usb760 directly in the comp, or with my Cradlepoint CRT-350, niether work.
The connection keeps timing out.
I do a lot of collaboration work via IRC, and if Verizon EVDO won't let me use IRC, it's useless to me.
Anyone here with VZW that can use IRC?
I hope it's just a setting somewhere.
Does Verizon EVDO block ports 6000-7000 or something? |

run ShieldsUP, it will let you know if ports are blocked since it's probably the same computer your AV/firewall probably isn't the culprit, but you may want to see if a application or windows update threw it off.
also you might want to switch to OpenDNS suppor for it is there in the cradlepoint firmwares, as well as just setting it in your windows TCP/IP settings. _________________ PortoBatMBR1000 |

Well shieldup didn't scan the ports IRC uses.
I changed the DNS servers in both the router and the comp, IRC still will not work.
I need a way to see if Verizon is blocking ports 6000-7000. |

your able to specify a port range, though only 64 ports at a time, might want to target specific ports.
also could try port forwarding on the outgoing ports through an open port.

Yes, all IRC ports are closed.
Why would Verizon do this?
Edit: Ok, well not sure these sheilds up results are accurate. It's telling me port 80 is closed.
How can I use the net if 80 is closed? |

Does no one here have experience with EVDO & IRC working/not working?
It seems for me anyways, Verizon wireless is blocking ports 6667, 6668, & 6669.
Does Sprint allow IRC on its network?
I'm trying to figure this out within the 30 day Trial period so I can send the Verizon modem back if I need to. |

I got the Sprint modem today, however the connection is terrible. Best I can get is a -97dBm outside, and -105dBm inside. Compared to the Verizon signal strength of -43dBm outside and -63dBm indoors.
I was able to connect to IRC, but considering the signal strength and speed tests, it's not going to cut it.
I finally got an answer from Verizon. Afet 2 weeks of them telling me "it should work, we don't block anything"
Here is what they had to say about irc.quakenet.org:
"We are currently blocking this IP address from accessing our network as the result of IRC command and control attacks across the network. Customer will need to speak with site administrator in order to resolve security risk. Once the risk is resolved, the site will automatically be removed form the list."
Thing is, it seems any IRC server I try they are blocking it...
Seems like a fight I'm not going to win. |
