* Wants stop to use of "misleading" maps in Verizon ads
* Says ads are causing "incalculable" market share loss
* Asks for temporary restraining order

NEW YORK, Nov 3 (Reuters) - AT&T Inc is suing Verizon Wireless in an effort to stop its bigger mobile rival from using "misleading" coverage maps in ads that AT&T says are causing it to lose "incalculable market share."

According to the lawsuit, which AT&T said it filed in Atlanta federal court, a recently launched ad campaign shows maps with white spaces that mislead consumers into thinking AT&T has no network coverage outside of areas where it offers high-speed mobile services, known as third-generation or 3G.

But AT&T argued that its customers can "fully use their wireless devices outside of a '3G' coverage area and undisputedly have coverage in areas depicted by white or blank spaces on the maps used in Verizon's advertisements."

It asked the court for a temporary restraining order against Verizon Wireless, a venture of Verizon Communications Inc and Vodafone Group Plc, so that its rival cannot benefit from the ads while the court sets a date for a preliminary and permanent injunction hearing.

"Verizon has stepped over the line of legitimate comparative advertising," AT&T said in an emailed copy of the the lawsuit, which was not immediately available online.

Maybe it will kick start AT&T into getting 3G service rolled on out to the rest of the country in more rural areas instead of just the big cities. I know out where I live the only thing I can get from AT&T coverage is EDGE which I was on for several months until EVDO became available through Alltel and I switched because who wants to download at 200kbps when you could be downloading at 1.3Mbps for the same price.

Alltel has been great for me up until the point of the Verizon merger at which point things have started to go sort of downhill in terms of my download speeds and ping times as well as the fact when my contract runs out next year I'll be looking at a 5GB download cap with crazy overage fees. I know AT&T states a 5GB limit in their service agreement as well but at least when I had service with them a little over a year ago they never seemed to enforce it because I went over 5GB about every month and never had any additional charges on my bill.

ATT customers need to hope that the judge that hears this case is an ATT customer who cannot stand the lack of "3G" coverage with his iPhone.

The judge will then make a ruling that forever more defines what can or can't be called "3G coverage", and make ATT pay dearly for trying to fool the world into thinking their large network is "3G' just because a "3G" phone can operate on it at EDGE speeds.

WTF ATT?
