I have a Sprint Mifi and data plan. I just got a notice in the mail from sprint saying:
"Your 2G data service will be discontinued December 31, 2009"
"Affected phone numbers and models: MiFi 2200 by Novatel"
"Remember, to continue using your phone(s) for data, you must upgrade before December 31, 2009 to avoid disruption in your service".
What does this mean? I mostly get Rev.A connections (sometimes 1xRTT when travelling). Does this mean just that 1xRTT will no longer be available or is my whole plan going away? I have an old grandfathered "unlimited" account (but I don't think I've ever gone over 5G), month to month now. |

Upgrade what? I don't understand what they want you to upgrade to. |

I did not get this letter. Where did you buy yours? Did you extend your contract at the time of purchase?
I bought mine in a Sprint store and added it to my existing unlimited account but the current terms were extended for 2 years.
Here's another question: Are you sure that you don't inadvertently have 2 accounts? |

Hello,
It looks like you have placed 4 orders previously with 3Gstore.com, including the MiFi. You purchased without service, so we do not have your account info or phone number, or we would look right now. I am curious what is going on and we can get to the bottom of it.
Can you provide:
- your account number
- your phone number
- scan of the letter you received
DO NOT POST THIS INFO to EVDOforums, send to sales@3gstore.com. If you are not comfortable providing this info, I completely understand. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

Yup, I'm sure. I did an online ESN swap after I got my mifi from 3gstore. It went very smoothly. I've done several swaps in the past without incident. I've had the Mifi since end of July and the letter is dated October 14. |

Hmmm. There are other reports about this. Including this one.
I'm still unsure from that explanation whether I will have 1xRTT access in 2010. |

artemis, got your email with the account info and the scanned letter. Thanks!
We have forwarded it to our Sprint contacts and will either contact you privately, or post the answer up here. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

OK, got the answer from Sprint. Got a ton of info, here is the important info:
| Quote: | 2G Data Decommissioning Causing Customer Confusion
A legal notification was mistakenly mailed to many customers with newer 3G devices and is causing confusion surrounding the 12/31/09 decommissioning of the 2G data network. The letter incorrectly informs the customers to upgrade to a 3G device to continue accessing data.
If 3G device customers inquire about this, use the following talking points:
* Disregard the letter because it is inaccurate.
* They do not need to upgrade to another device at this time.
* If applications are affected on their 3G phone, Sprint will contact them. |
Also, another document states:
| Quote: | Q: What is Circuit Switched Data?
A: 2G Data is the common (and incorrect term) for Circuit Switched Data or Dial-up Data. Circuit
switched data is the same thing used in the 1990s to access AOL or other Internet Service Provider using
a modem. Customers on the Sprint CDMA network can configure computing devices to use circuit
switched data through their phones and connection cards.
Q: What is circuit switched (2G) data decommissioning?
A: Sprint is discontinuing its 10-year-old circuit switched data platform on 12/31/09 based on a steady
usage decline in the past few years. This means:
* The data function on 2G phones, modems and data cards will no longer operate.
* Voice and text functions will continue to work on 2G data-capable devices.
* Some data applications that utilize this technology will no longer operate (older applications
requiring access using a dial-up number).
* 3G devices that are using circuit switch data will also be impacted, but voice, text and 3G data will not be interrupted |
So, the short answer, the letter was sent in error and what they are calling "2G", is really dial-up modem access and this isn't going to impact anyone on a mobile broadband card. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

I received the same letter explaining my Novatel S720 was obsoleted. This is the only device in the contract and the only account I have ever had with sprint.
If they mailed this to everyone, it's going to be expensive to field the calls. |

Ah, that's interesting. Thanks. That raises a question for me. I was going to sell PCMIA card that runs at about 2G speed to someone for $20.
It sounds like what folks had been referring to as the "2G" air card (an older PCMIA modem) may actually have not technically been a 2G device. I'll have to have them check whether this will still work. |
